Abstract
This thesis aims to show the way Sylvia Plath found her true voice in writing by tracing the aspects of change from her early to later poems. This study will attempt to show that the transformation in Plath's poetry was an inevitable process that marked her formation as a woman and poet. Chapter 1 examines the causes that induced Plath to make a distinction between her early and late poems. When her point of view about the experiences and lives of women changed, she modifies her attitude in writing. By inquiring into femininity, Plath could be sure that she attained her authority as a poet. Chapter 2 examines the fact that Plath was not able to achieve great success with ease and speed. From the beginning she had difficulties to have faith in her own creativity. The early Plath composed her poems on a belief that women lack in creativity and authority. Accordingly, her early poems were written from a male point of view. Plath hoped to be empowered with the poet's voice, which resulted almost in silence when she could not achieve it. This demonstrates that Plath's poetic system based on the patriarchal literary tradition combines generative and destructive power. Plath realized that she was not able to fully grow out of patriarchal nurturance, and that she needed to free herself from the male tradition. The following chapter deals with Plath's late poems in which she focused on the female Self. Believing that she would be endowed with true voice by looking into her Self, she tried to reevaluate women's lives and femininity in her poetry. Plath's attention to how a woman leads a life made her notice the disrupted state of the female Self. She made an effort to establish the new female Self by eliminating the divided old one. Her effort to establish the female Self and identity bestowed her with true poetic voice. Through these analyses, it was possible to view Sylvia Plath's confidence in her own creative competence. She is considered as a woman poet who answered the question how women write. Therefore, her work did not only mature her poetic Self, but constructed and developed the female poetic tradition.
