이야기하기와 목회상담

Abstract

본 논문은 내담자가 이야기를 하면서 자아를 일관성 있게 재구성하고, 성서 이야기와의 지평융합을 통하여 새로운 통찰력으로 자신을 인식하여, 미래를 설계하는 이야기 목회상담에 관한 연구이다. 인간은 이야기를 하면서 자신의 정체성을 형성하고, 과거, 현재, 미래라는 세 차원의 시간에서 자신의 시각으로 다양한 삶의 경험과 사건들을 연속적으로 재편집한다. 동시에 인간은 사회ㆍ문화적인 공동체의 전통과 가치라는 큰 자아의 이야기 속에서 영향을 주고 받으면서, 자신만의 독특한 이야기를 저작한다. 이렇게 인간은 본질적으로 이야기하며 삶의 방향을 조정해 나간다. 그러므로 이야기하기에는 인간의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있다고 할 수 있다. 또한 성서 이야기 속에는 하나님께서 인간을 창조하셔서 구원하시는 수많은 역사적인 사건들이 기록되어 있다. 그리고 성서는 인간은 하나님과의 인격적인 관계 속에서 계약을 맺은 백성이라는 분명한 정체성을 밝힌다. 하나님의 목적과 구속 활동을 담은 이야기가 반복하여 들려질 때, 듣는 이에게 치유의 힘을 전달하여, 새로운 관점으로 삶을 바라볼 수 있는 계기가 된다. 찰스 V. 거킨(Charles V. Gerkin)은 이야기 이론을 기독교 전통의 이야기와 연결시켜, 내담자의 삶을 재해석하여 새로운 이야기를 창조하는 이야기 목회상담의 체계를 세웠다. 그는 존 도미닉 크로산(John Dominic Crossan)이 제시한 이야기를 구성하는 기본적인 다섯가지 언어유형인 신화, 변증, 액션, 풍자, 우화를 이야기 목회상담 이론의 전개방식으로 접목하였다. 이야기 목회상담의 첫 번째 단계는 과거에 자신의 삶을 지탱해 온 중심적인 이야기들을 발견하는 데서부터 시작한다. 이 개인의 신화는 내담자의 일정한 해석과 관련되어서, 계속적으로 삶의 경험들을 재조직하고 통합하는데 영향을 끼친다. 그런데 이 개인의 신화가 부정적인 신념과 가치관으로 형성되어 있을 경우에는, 인간의 성장을 저해하는 요소로 악순환을 일으키며 작용할 수 있다. 그래서 개인의 신화 중 문제를 찾아서 내담자와 분리시켜 표출하여 이름을 붙여 정의한다. 두 번째 단계는 내담자의 현재 이야기를 해석하는 것이다. 변증은 문제가 되는 내담자의 신화를 다른 각도로 해석할 수는 없는지, 다시 한 번 생각해 보는 것이다. 그래서 개인을 지배하던 부정적인 신화를 벗어난, 긍정적인 독특한 결과를 가진 이야기를 찾는다. 액션은 내담자의 문제의 영향력과 독특한 결과를 가진 이야기의 영향력을 추적하는 것이다. 이 과정에서 내담자의 이야기들에 대해서 행위의 관점과 정체성의 관점에서 과거, 현재, 미래를 오고 가며 질문을 던진다. 풍자는 내담자의 이야기를 약간의 거리감을 두고 풍자적으로 재구성하는 것이다. 그런 후 우화로써의 성경 이야기가 내담자의 이야기와 만날 때, 자신의 삶을 재조명하는 변화가 일어난다. 세 번째 단계는 이러한 과정을 거쳐서 자신에 대하여 예전과는 다른 더 넓혀진 지평을 갖게 된 내담자가 새로운 미래 이야기를 다시 만드는 것이다. 이 때, 희망과 상상력을 동원하여 현실적인 가능성을 고려하여 미래의 자신의 모습을 예측한다. 그리고 내담자는 있는 모습 그대로의 자신을 수용하고, 자신을 향한 하나님의 약속을 기대한다. 그리하여 하나님의 현존 안에서 자신의 인생을 책임지며 자유롭게 살아가는 새로운 존재가 된다. 그런 후에 내담자는 교회 공동체 안에 소속하여, 기독교 전통으로 형성된 회중들의 이야기 구조 속에서 자신의 정체성을 확립한다. 또한 종말론적인 정체성을 가지고, 예배를 드리며, 순례자의 인생을 살아간다.;This paper deals with pastoral counseling from a narrative perspective in which clients reorganize her or his self in a meaningful way by telling and retelling their life stories. People come to seek help when their lives are not making sense to them. Telling and retelling is a way of making meaning out of chaos. People also come to a caregiver when they want to tell their stories in a different way. Pastoral counseling is a process of helping clients tell and revise their stories in relation with the Christian stories. The Christian stories including the Bible, Christian traditions, or stories of community open a new horizon to clients. Charles V. Gerkin emphasized the importance of narrative in doing pastoral counseling. For him, pastoral counseling is a hermeneutical work which helps clients interpret their life stories in light of the Christian narratives. From Gerkin's perspective, pastoral counseling consists of three processes. First, pastoral counseling is a process of helping clients tell the past stories. Client is defined as a person who is not able to tell his or her stories freely. She or he is the victim of the past story, myths, or wrong beliefs. When individual's myth is figured out, expressed, named and defined, she or he can understand who she or he is. Second, pastoral counseling is a process of interpreting client's current narratives. Gerkin made use of myth, apologue, action, satire and parable to interpret a person's current life. Apologue is about revisiting the myth at issue from different point of view, thereby finding out a narrative with unique and positive factors, not governed by negative myth. Action tracks the influence of both problems. Satire reorganizes a narrative sarcastically by distancing oneself from it. Parable becomes horizontally merged with a client's narrative, allowing him or her to re-focus on own life narratives. Third, pastoral counseling is a process of rewriting life narrative for the future. Since a person's life is reviewed in process of telling and retelling, she or he becomes able to tell his or her life in a different way for the future. However, she or he needs a new perspective or plot with which she or he can reorganize her or his past and make new life scripts for the future. The Christian stories provide people with new perspectives. The christian community becomes a place in which people try a new life.
