하와이 대한부인구제회 연구(1919~1945)

Abstract

본 논문은 하와이 한인 여성단체인 대한부인구제회(大韓婦人救濟會, Korean Women's Relief Society)를 고찰함으로써 하와이 이민사회 내에서, 독립운동단체 내에서 대한부인구제회의 역할과 위치를 자리매김하였다. 또한 대한부인구제회가 하와이 한인 사회와 조국 독립운동에 끼친 영향을 평가해 보았다. 초기 이민시대의 하와이내 한인 여성들은 전통적인 여성상을 탈피하여 적극적인 경제활동과 사회활동을 펴나갔다. 이는 하와이 한인사회에 활력을 불어넣어 주었을 뿐만 아니라, 가정과 사회 내에서 여성의 위치를 더욱 공고히 해나가는 기반이 되었다. 여성들은 타국에서의 한인 여성이라는 동질감 속에서 유대를 맺고, 친목모임을 결성하기 시작했다. 이후 이들은 교회와 학교 등에서 교육을 받고, 여러 소모임들을 결성하고 운영하면서 리더쉽을 키워나갔다. 이러한 일련의 흐름은 곧 체계적인 운영회칙을 가진 공식적인 여성단체들의 조직을 이끌어냈다. 조국의 3·1운동 소식이 하와이에 전해지자, 이전에 산재하였던 여러 여성단체들은 통합하여 대한부인구제회를 결성하였다. 이는 여성의 역량을 집중시키기 위한 방법이었다. 대한부인구제회는 기독교 이념을 가진 단체였으며, 항상 흰색 복장을 착용하고 적십자 표시를 사용함으로써 스스로 구제단체임을 내세웠다. 1931년 부인구제회는 동지회측과 국민회측 두 파로 나뉘어졌다. 분열 이후 부인구제회는 같은 이름을 가진 두개의 단체로 존재하게 되었고, 각기 임원을 뽑고 행사를 치르고 활동하였다. 구제 활동에서는 양측의 차이가 없었으나 독립운동 자금 지원 활동에서는 노선상의 차이를 보였다. 대한부인구제회의 국내외 한인동포 지원 및 구제활동은 교포사회의 평안과 결속, 교회와 사회단체의 후원, 교육 장려, 재난동포 구제 등 다양하게 이루어졌다. 이러한 활동은 국권회복운동일 뿐 아니라 미주 한인의 계몽운동이었고 여성의 개화운동이었다. 조국의 독립운동 지원 방법 중 자금 모집은 하와이에 있는 한인 여성들이 조국의 독립을 위해 할 수 있는 최선의 방법이었다. 모금액은 독립운동의 군자금 및 외교금으로 쓰여졌고 독립운동 지도자들의 여비가 되었다. 대한부인구제회의 적극적인 독립운동 후원 활동은 미주 한인의 조국에 대한 기대와 자긍심을 높이는데 기여하였다. 대한부인구제회의 활동은 하와이 한인사회 전반에 여성을 주요 사회구성원으로, 여성단체를 필수적인 단체로 인식하게 하였다. 아울러 대한부인구제회는 1930년대 후반부터 미주대표단체의 한축을 차지하여 의사결정을 하게 되는 성과를 낳음으로써 여성단체의 위상을 높였다.;This paper is to study identity, social and historical consciousness of early Korean women immigrants in Hawaii by investigating the establishment and activity of a Korean Women's group in Hawaii, Korean Women's Relief Society(KWRS). The role and status of KWRS in Hawaiian immigrants' society and in independent movement groups were defined. The influence of KWRS on Korean community in Hawaii and Korean independence movement were also studied. In early immigration era, Korean women in Hawaii broke free from traditional images of Korean women. They aggressively participated in economical activities and social activities. This Vitalized the Korean community in Hawaii as well as made the base to strengthen the position of women in home and society more. These women had a common bonding as korean women in foreign country. They started forming social gatherings in order to solve their problems. Later on, these women were educated in churches and schools, formed small groups, and learned leadership by running these groups. These activities resulted in establishment of official women's organizations having a systematic regulation. When the story of March First independence movement of motherland reached Hawaii, scattered women's organizations were united to maximize their capabilities and formed Korean Women's Relief Society. The society had Christian ideology. The object of the society was to perform God-given rights and duties. The members of the Society always wore white clothes and put on red cross to inform others that the nature of the Society was a relief organization. In 1931, KWRS was divided into two sides, i.e. a pro-National Party side and a pro-Korean National Association side. Since that split, the two sides having the same name, KWRS, existed and each selected their staffs and carried out the event separately. There was no difference between two parties in the relief activity, except the fund support activity for independence movement. The support and the relief activity of KWRS for domestic and overseas Koreans were carried out in various aspects such as the comfort and unity of Koreans in America, the sponsorship of church and social community, education encouragement, relief of compatriots having a misfortune etc. Such activities were a sovereignity restoration movement as well as a civilization movement for Korean residents in Hawaii and an enlightenment movement for women. The fund-raising among the ways to support the national independence movement was the best way for Korean women in Hawaii to be able to do for the national independence. The amount of fund-raising was used for military chest and diplomatic fund and even traveling expenses for the nationalist leaders of independence movement. At that time, Korean residents in America covered most of activity fund for Korean provisional government and without the fund-raising of KWRS, the independence movement could not be carried out smoothly. The enthusiastic and positive activity of KWRS paved the way that Korean community in Hawaii became to recognize a woman as a major member of society and the women society as an essential society. In addition, KWRS contributed to promote the social position of women's society by holding an important position in representative societies in America and getting a right for decision making since the end of 1930's.
