Abstract
The study of this thesis is to examine, representative female writer of Korea's modern literature, Jeong-hee Oh's novels through the glasses of the 'fantastics', which functions as reproducing another reality, by which this thesis aims at revealing the nature of her unique world of works. Oh's novels regard women's identity as a problem through the internal consciousness of female characters who suffer from abnormal syndromes. The fantastics, in the aspect of literature, is an opportunistic world which makes it possible to suspect the things that have been believed to be absolute, and to look at them from a new prospective. Meanwhile, women's fantastics can be a useful way of thinking which helps to look at the outlook on the world that centers around phallicism, in a solid way. Therefore, the fantastics in Oh's novels reflects on the female characters' reality, who are placed in the society of phallicism. This reality is a reality that is anti-reality. The A section of each chapter will be organized into usual reality, psychological reality, and ideal reality, according to the reality which the female character confronts, in order to explain the writer's desireful female consciousness. Section B analyzes the aspects of narration, which are to substantiate the things in section A, and examines the way the fantastics is realized in the text. To begin with, chapter Ⅱ takes a look at the feminine fantastics as a hysterical subject that is at feud with the standardized reality, through a female character who perceives herself as 'world-my existence', while looking strangely at the everyday life within the fence of house and family. The narration is led by an objective narrator, but it is internalized due to the projection into a character when the female character subjectively recognizes the external world. This gives an effect of dual narration. In the next place, chapter Ⅲ examines the internal consciousness of the female character who harbors matrophobia, in order to investigate the overthrowing fantastics where an oppressed woman's inside invades into the symbolic order and captures the schism of the patriarchal reality. The narration, here, is characterized by alternate narrators. That is, when the first-person female narrator tells a story, a mother's voice intervenes in it. This hybrid voice creates multiplex situations in the text, and turns out to be a narration that shows a disrupted femininity in the symbolic order. Lastly, chapter Ⅳ deals with the transcendental fantastics that is a feminine, creative desire to overcome the dichotic thought, derived from phallicism, and to move toward the monistic world view. The monistic world, the goal of Oh's novels, is a mother's space, i.e., the chora, which is the origin of existence, and it is attempted at by those egos who are reconciled with the world, in the latest novels of Oh's. The fantastic feature of feminine literature, which is also characteristic of Oh's late works, tries to disturb the upside-down world, especially for women, and remedy it. When a reflective narrator tells a story with a unitary focus, it is related to writing, or writing a novel, by which feminine characters look inward in order to rediscover their egos. The first-person narrator, which is called 'Ⅰ,' examines her real self and is reconciled with the world in a source space, by way of a unified focus. By making use of the ‘fantastics,' one of the ways of thinking, in investigating Oh's novels which presents the matter of women's existence, in a distinct manner from the former novelistic aesthetics, this thesis confirms women's reality which is distorted by phallicism. Oh's feminine consciousness, as a novelist, is connected to the upsetting desire where a woman, based on patriarchy, re-recognizes herself, as a hysterical subject, and tries to unveil the mechanism in which the symbolic order becomes abject through a defamed mother. On the other hand, her novels intend to suppress a dichotic way of thinking and go back to the mother's womb that is the unitary world. Oh's novels show that the reality is centered around men/reason, which can be a reverse illusion to women. Hence, the abnormality, at the bottom of Oh's novels, can be seen as a mutated form of the reality which women face with under phallic order, and it should be re-estimated as the abnormality under inverse discussion.;본 연구는 한국 현대문학의 대표적인 여성작가인 오정희 소설을 감추어져 있는 현실을 낯설게 보이도록 하는 또 다른 현실의 재현으로서 기능하는 ‘환상성(the Fantastics)’을 통해 살펴봄으로써 독특한 작품세계의 본질을 밝히는 것을 그 목적으로 한다.
