An English Guidebook to the Half-body Bath

Abstract

The purpose of this M.A thesis is to provide an English guidebook to the half-body bath, which gained great popularity among Koreans in the winter of 2003. A number of books on the subject have been published in Korean since then; however, none is available in English yet and no project is currently conducted to publish an English version as of June 2005. Therefore, this thesis project aims at introducing the historical and medical background of the half-body bath along with its procedure and the importance of each step. Prior to the technical editing and translation of the English guidebook, the research results of professor Yoon, Ho-joon and Choi, Myung-gyu from the Kangnam St. Mary’s Hospital; professor Kim, Byung-ro from Changwon University; and the KBS documentary team of Saengrobyeongsaui Bimil were analyzed. A theoretical paper, discussing several principles of technical writing, translating, and editing, prefaces the technical translation of the English guidebook and presents criteria for a competent technical editor. Appendices include a manual for the preparation of graduate thesis, detailing a set of rules concerning the format of the M.A. thesis every Ewha graduate student of Professional Writing Program needs to abide by.;본 논문은 현재 한국에서 출판된 반신욕 관련서적을 종합하여 영문으로 제작한 것이다. 획기적인 건강 목욕법으로, 2004년 겨울, 한국방송 제 1 티비 의학 다큐멘터리 『생로병사의 비밀』에서 처음 소개된 반신욕은, 이후 한국인들 사이에서 선풍적인 인기를 끌었으며, 아울러 관련 책자 역시 다수 출판되었다. 그러나 아쉽게도 일본과 한국을 제외한 국가에서는 반식욕에 대한 이해가 부족할 뿐 아니라, 반신욕 관련 책자 역시 전무한 실정이다. 이에 본 논문은 영어 사용 가능자에게 반신욕의 문화적 · 의학적 배경과 방법을 자세히 설명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 논문의 저자는 반신욕의 영문본 제작에 앞서 강남 성모병원의 윤호준 · 최명규 교수 연구팀, 창원 대학교의 김병로 교수 연구팀, 그리고 한국방송 제 1 티비 『생로병사의 비밀』 제작팀에 의해 이루어진 연구결과 분석을 선행하였다. 이는 기존 반신욕 관련 출판물들이 공통적으로 갖고 있는 임상 결과를 토대로 한 의학적 근거 부족 문제를 보완하기 위함이다. 본 논문의 전반부에는 반신욕의 영문본 제작 배경과 방법론을 서술하였고, 문서의 효율적인 의미전달을 위해 사용된 기술영작과 번역의 원칙 및 이론을 분석하였으며, 이들 원칙이 본 논문의 구성 및 문체작성에 적용된 예를 함께 제시하였다. 또한 이화여자대학교 영어영문학과 대학원에서 전문영어를 전공하고 있는 학생들을 위한 『석사학위 논문 준비를 위한 편람』을 부록에 첨부하였다.
