Abstract
Academic research on juvenile literature hitherto has focused on such works' literary and educational value as well as reception by children. This research oversees the fact that unlike adult literature, juvenile literature is selected for its educational purposes by adults arid recommended or imposed upon children. Especially after the 1990s there has been much intervention in the selection of juvenile literature with the formation of a new dominant structure possessing symbolic force infringing the autonomy of writers and their juvenile readers. In spite of this there has been little academic study concerning this phenomenon. This study attempts to elucidate the emergence and operation of the new dominant structure that appeared in tandem with the expansion of the market for juvenile literature in the 1990s. The questions to be addressed are as follows: what was the background for the growth of juvenile literature in the 1990s. How does the dominant structure in the field of juvenile literature differ after the 199Os? What were the strategies deployed by the new dominant force in order to gain power? What is the reproduction mechanism and its functions? What are the effects of this dominant structure on juvenile literature? This research borrows important concepts from Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of culture. Bourdieu's perspective allows us to doubt the widely held notion that literature itself can be a product transcending time and retaining distinct value. His concepts of 'field of study,' 'habitus,' and 'symbolic power' facilitates in analyzing the process in which participants in the field of juvenile children obtain materialistic and symbolic gains entailed by the procurement of symbolic power. This process endures competition and conflict among the participants that occur with the acceptance of a particular work. Korean juvenile literature was able to expand quantitatively with the effects of the new dominant structure formed after the 1990s. However, qualitatively it has created repercussions. If the period preceding the 1990s can be characterized as an era where romantic juvenile literature excluded the realistic kind, the period following the 1990s can be described as the exact opposite. In the area of adult literature, realist literature has been slowly in decline with new literary experimentation such as those incorporating post-modernism. In contrast. we are seeing a anachronistic revert to realism in juvenile literature going as far back to that of the 1920∼30s-period of Japanese occupation. Although Korean juvenile literature has enjoyed rapid growth after the 1990s, children have lost their position as the subject. Civil organizations, wielding influence in the name of winning the right for children to be able to read quality books, have been exercising their power thus reducing children to mere objects of juvenile literature. Not until this phenomenon ceases to persist can we expect a field of study truly taking children into account.
