라벨(M. Ravel)의 「고귀하고 감상적인 왈츠(Valses nobles et sentimentales)」에 대한 분석

Abstract

본 논문은 라벨(Maurice Joseph Ravel, 1875-1937)의 피아노곡 「고귀하고 감상적인 왈츠 (Valses nobles et sentimentales)」에 대한 분석 연구이다. 곡에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 라벨의 피아노곡에 나타난 음악적 특징에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 악곡을 분석하였다. 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」는 슈베르트의 왈츠를 모델로 하여 왈츠를 연달아 엮은 모음곡으로 슈베르트 왈츠까지 왈츠의 모든 시대를 효과적으로 통합한 곡이라고 할 수 있다. 라벨의 음악세계의 바탕이 되는 인상주의는, 19세기 후반에서 20세기 초 독일의 낭만주의에 대한 반발로 생겨난 것으로 과도하게 부과된 독일 음악의 감정적인 성향을 의식적으로 피하고 감정이 절제된 세련성을 추구했다. 인상주의라는 미술의 형태가 시발점이 되었으며 문학에 있어서는 상징주의라는 형태로 나타났다. 인상주의 음악의 중추적 인물로 꼽히는 드뷔시(Achille Claude Debussy, 1862-1918)는 피아노 테크닉 및 음색 수법에 관한 색다른 개념들을 만들어 냈는데 그의 비전통적 화성의 많은 부분이 라벨의 음악에 흡수되었다. 하지만 선율이나 화성의 흐름이 분명하지 않고 형식감이 유동적인 드뷔시의 음악과 달리 라벨은 드뷔시가 회피하는 형식 구조를 명확하게 하였을 뿐 아니라 모든 면에서 분명하고 명료한 것을 추구하였다. 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」는 총 7곡의 왈츠와 에필로그로 구성되어 있으며 모음곡이지만 각 곡은 시작과 끝 음이 일치하여 자연스럽게 연결되어 있다. 각 곡은 2부, 3부 혹은 4부의 형식으로 각 부분이 뚜렷하게 구분되며 주로 규칙적인 악절 구조로 되어있다. 전체적으로 명확한 선율선이 드러나지만 전개, 발전되기 보다는 동형진행, 반복에 의해 나타나며 조성과 함께 고대선법, 온음음계, 반음음계를 사용함으로써 인상주의적 색채를 드러낸다. 화성은 전통적인 Ⅴ-Ⅰ의 기능적인 화성진행이 쓰이는 동시에 7도와 9도 화음, 지속음에 대한 복잡한 화음을 많이 사용했으며 4도, 5도, 8도 병진행도 빈번히 나타난다. 리듬은 전통적인 3박자의 왈츠리듬과 함께 당김음, 헤미올라가 사용되었다. 이처럼「Valses nobles et sentimentales」는 슈베르트의 왈츠를 모델로 하여 전통적인 형식, 균형 잡힌 프레이즈, 인상주의적 화성의 섬세함, 분명한 리듬을 특징으로 하는 왈츠로서, 고전주의적인 왈츠 형식과 인상주의적 화성이 잘 조화되어 라벨의 독창적 음악세계를 보여주는 모음곡이다.;This dissertation involves the analysis of the piano works of Maurice Joseph Ravel(1875-1937). In order to understand these compositions, I have analyzed the works in respect to the musical features inherent in the writing of Ravel. It is Ravel who effectively united the development of the waltz, and his 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」is a suite consisting of waltzes based on those of Franz Schubert. Impressionism, the foundation of Ravel's musical expression, emerged as an antidote to the full-blown Romanticism of Germany in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Impressionism deliberately avoided the excessively emotional tendencies of the German music. Rather, it pursued the nobility of emotional moderation. Its origin was in painting and it appeared in literature as Symbolism. Achille Claude Debussy (1862-1918), one of the most important composers of Impressionism, created varied concepts about piano techniques and tone colors. Ravel absorbed much of Debussy¹s untraditional harmonies into his music. However, his differed from Debussy's music which was somewhat ambiguous in melodic structure, harmonic process, and form. Ravel sought clarity not only in the formal structure, but also in every aspect of artistic expression. 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」 contains seven waltzes and an epilogue. It is a suite, but each piece is naturally connected with identical pitches at the beginning and ending. Each one contains regular sentences and clear structure; ie. binary, ternary, and four-part form. It demonstrates clear melodic line throughout the composition, but Ravel utilized sequences and repetitions instead of developing the musical material. He also incorporated modes as well as diatonic and chromatic scales with the tonality in order to achieve impressionistic colors. He applied not only the traditional functional harmonies like V-I, but also more complicated harmonies such as seventh, ninth, eleventh chords and suspensions. In addition, we clearly see the frequent use of parallel fourths, fifths, and octaves. Rhythmically, he combined syncopation and hemiola with the traditional triple meter of the dance. As previously mentioned, 「Valses nobles et sentimentales」 is a waltz-suite organized by and featuring traditional structure, well-balanced phrases, delicacy of impressionistic harmonies, and the unambiguous rhythm of Schubert¹s waltz.
