Johannes Brahms의 Waltz Op. 39 에 대한 연구

Abstract

독일의 낭만주의 작곡가들 가운데에서도 보수적 성향을 많이 띠고 있는 브람스(Johannes Brahms, 1833~1897)는 오스트리아의 비인에서 활동하는 동안 그의 작품 중에서 좀처럼 보기 힘든 경쾌하고 단순함을 느낄 수 있는 작품인 왈츠 Op. 39를 작곡하였는데 이 곡은 그의 피아노 곡 가운데서도 요한 슈트라우스 Ⅱ세(Johann Stauss, 1825~1899)의 영향을 받은 비교적 부드럽고 편안한 곡이다. 그러나 이 곡은 슈트라우스의 왈츠처럼 화려하지 않고 쇼팽의 왈츠처럼 귀족적인 것도 아닌, 장식과 기교를 배제하면서도 광범위한 화성을 활용하여 음향에서 충실함을 느끼게 하여 상당히 브람스적인 면을 느끼게 하는 작품이다. 그는 전통적인 형식과 뚜렷한 구성을 선호했고, 주선율을 각 악장마다 연관시켜 표현했다. 왈츠라는 제한된 리듬체계 내에서도 여러 가지 리듬형태를 구사하고 있는데 점음표, 당김음(syncopation), 이음줄(tie)이나 붙임줄(slur), 스타카토(staccato), 헤미올라(hemiola), 기타 다양한 복합리듬(polyrhythm) 등에 따라 매 곡들이 3박자 리듬을 유지하면서도 변화 있게 엮어진다. 비교적 짧은 길이의 작품들이지만 그 내부에서도 장 · 단조로의 전조가 자주 일어나며 대개 한 곡이 한 가지 소재로 완성된다. 브람스는 후기 낭만주의의 대표적인 작곡가임에도 불구하고 고전주의의 절대 음악이 추구하는 엄격한 형식을 따랐으며 이 형식 위에 낭만주의의 자유로운 음악적 감정을 조화롭게 적용했다. 브람스의 음악은 이러한 바하(J. S. Bach, 1685~1750)의 대위법적 기법과 베토벤(L. V. Beethoven, 1770~1827)의 절대적인 형식미, 낭만주의 작곡가인 슈베르트(F. Schubert, 1979~1828)의 아름다운 선율 진행과 자연스러운 변주의 묘미, 쇼팽(F. chopin, 1810~1849)의 피아노 음악의 서정성과 그에 대한 열정, 리스트(F. Liszt, 1811~1886)의 기교, 그리고 스승이었던 슈만(R. Schumann, 1810~1856)으로부터의 문학적 정신의 영향을 합하여 자신의 독특한 음악세계를 구축하였다. 즉 브람스는 상반되게 보이는 낭만주의와 고전주의의 속성을 자신의 음악에서 훌륭히 결합시켰으며, 그 결과 독일 낭만주의의 색체로 치장된 고전주의 형식이라는 훌륭한 혼합물이 나오게 되었다. 동시대 작곡가들의 특징인 민족주의 음악양식의 성장에 빠질 수 없는 한 몫을 담당한 브람스는 어떤 작곡가들에게서도 찾아 볼 수 없는 특유한 성격을 많이 지니고 있다. 이 곡에도 북독일풍의 무겁고 중후한 기운이 감돌고 있으며, 무도회용 곡으로써의 왈츠가 아닌 랜틀러(Landler)의 요소와 독일적 정서가 바탕이 되어 정해진 틀에서 벗어난 자유로운 구성으로 브람스의 특징을 보여준다. 본 논문에서는 브람스의 피아노 음악에 나타나는 이상의 특징적인 요소들을 예를 통해 살펴본 후 그의 피아노 작품 Waltz Op. 39를 분석해 봄으로써 연주자들이 이 작품을 해석하고 연주하는데 도움을 주고자 한다.;Johannes Brahms(1833~1897), who had inclination toward conservatism among the german romantic composers, composed Waltz Op39, which is cheerful and simple unlike his other pieces, during his life in Vienna, Austria, and this relatively soft and peaceful piece is one of those influenced by Johann Strauss(1825~1899). however, this piece is not as brilliant as Strauss waltz nor as aristocratic as that of Chopin`s waltz, but typically Brahms in that it excludes ornamentation and techniques, and shows fullness of sound by using extensive harmony. He perferred traditional form and clear organization, and related the main melody to each movement. Even in its limited rhythmic system, the piece shows diverse rhythmic pattern by using dotted notes, syncopation, tie or slurs, staccato, hemiola, or other various polyrhythm, which make the piece less monotonous in its triple time rhythm. Despite its short length, the piece show frequent modulation, and is completed with one motive. Even though Brahms was a composer in the late Romanticism period, he followed strict form that absolute music of the Classic period, pursued, and he applied on the form the uncontrolled musical emotion of Romanticism. Brahms created his unique musical world by combining the contrapuntal technique of J. S Bach (1685~1750)m absolute formal beauty of L, V. Beethoven (1770~1827), beautiful melodic procession and charm of natural variation of F. Schubert (1979~1828), passion for lyricism spirit of R. Schumann(1810~1856), who was his teacher. Brahms combined seemingly contrary characteristics of Romanticism and Classicism successfully, which resulted in the creation of the Classicist form that is embellished with the color of the German Romanticism. Brahms contributed to the growth of the Nationalist music form, characteristic of composers of his time followed, and his work shows unique qualities that works of other composers do not possess. this piece of work has the spirit of Northern Germany`s heaviness, and it is founded upon the elements of a Landler, not a waltz as a ball music, and German emotion. thus it exhibits different feature of brahms` music by using unrestricted ideas that goes over the formal rules. The purpose of this study is to examine the distinctive elements mentioned above shown in the piano music of Brahms, analyze his piano waltz Op. 39, and provide assistance for musicians to analyze and perform the work.
