클림트 회화 문양을 응용한 니트웨어 디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 패션에서 니트웨어는 독특한 질감과 함께 다양한 문양을 통해 예술적 차원의 조형미까지 나타낼 뿐만 아니라 부드러운 신축성으로 인해, 기능성을 추구하는 현대인들의 요구에 부합된다. 이에 따라 많은 디자이너들이 복합적인 수공예적 기법을 응용하여 다채로운 니트웨어 문양을 개발하고 있는 실정이다. 패션 디자이너는 사람들의 변화하는 패션 욕구를 만족시키기 위해 끊임없는 노력을 하고 있으며, 그 일환으로 널리 알려진 명화(名畵)를 모티프로 한 연구와 작품들을 제작하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 아르누보의 대가(大家)로 널리 알려진 구스타프 클림트의 회화 중에서 여러 문양을 모티프로 선택하여 니트웨어를 디자인하였다. 클림트의 회화는 표현주의와 상징주의적 이미지를 표현했을 뿐만 아니라 우아함과 분방함으로 신비로운 마력을 발휘했다. 특히 클림트가 사용한 다양한 아르누보적 선과 기하학적 장식은 패션 이미지에도 적합한 조형성을 가지고 있다. 이를 응용하여 본 연구는 스티칭, 펠팅, 니팅과 패치워크 등을 결합한 복합 기법을 사용하여 독특하고도 풍부한 질감의 소재를 개발 적용하고, 클림트 회화의 예술적인 문양을 니트웨어와 어울리게 이미지화함으로써 예술적 조형성이 돋보이는 니트웨어 디자인의 표현영역을 확대함을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구의 내용과 방법은 먼저 클림트의 생애와 회화의 특징, 색상과 문양 등을 문헌연구를 통해 분석하고, 클림트 회화의 다양한 문양과 색채를 모티프로 하였다. 그리고 니트웨어에 관한 일반적인 고찰과 함께 핸드니팅과 기계니팅, 패치워크, 자수, 그리고 프린팅 등 최근의 문양기법에 관한 내용을 사례별로 문헌연구와 인터넷 등을 통해 살펴보았다. 이어서 제작 기법으로 패치워크와 아플리케 등을 역시 문헌연구를 통해 살펴보고, 현대적 경향을 조사･분석하고, 이러한 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 실물 작품 8벌을 제작하였다. 클림트 회화의 이미지를 의상으로 나타내기 위해 수용성 부직포를 이용한 피스드 패치워크(pieced patchwork)와 아플리케 패치워크(applique patchwork) 기법을 니트에 접목하였다. 실물 작품의 구성은 하프코트, 원피스, 상의와 스커트 등으로 하였고, 문양은 클림트 작품에 많이 사용되었던 동그라미, 세모, 네모, 소용돌이 모양 등을 응용하였다. 본 연구에서 클림트 회화에 사용된 다양한 문양을 모티프로 디자인하여 8벌의 니트웨어를 실물 제작한 결과 다양하고도 풍부한 질감 의 니트웨어를 제작할 수 있었다. 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아르누보 양식에 주도적 역할을 한 구스타프 클림트의 회화에 대해 고찰한 결과, 아르누보적 특징이 잘 드러나는 유기적인 선과 다양한 기하학적인 장식 문양 들을 의상 디자인의 풍부한 장식적 모티프로 사용할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 작품의 색채에 있어서는 클림트의 회화에 비교적 많이 나타난 금색과 함께 은은한 느낌을 주는 아이보리, 강렬한 색채인 빨강과 검정, 파랑 등 다양한 색채를 사용함으로써 다양한 이미지의 의상을 제작할 수 있었다. 또한 클림트 회화에서 두드러진 문양의 선과 형태를 강조하기 위하여 모노톤의 아이보리와 골드의 유사 색채를 사용하는 등, 단순한 실루엣과 결합하여 회화의 문양과 선이 부각되도록 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 클림트 회화의 모자이크 방식의 문양을 도입함에 있어서 수용성 부직포를 활용하여 다양한 소재를 스티치로 패치워크 하였다. 이를 통하여 밀도 있는 구도의 문양을 자유롭게 표현할 수 있었으며 풍부한 질감대비 효과를 나타낼 수 있었다. 넷째, 클림트 회화의 예술적인 이미지를 더욱 풍부하게 표현하기 위하여 스티칭, 펠팅, 니팅의 다양한 기법을 결합하여 만든 장식 모티프들을 개발하여 패치워크함으로써 독특한 질감의 니트웨어 문양을 개발할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 그동안 널리 알려진 명화의 이미지나 문양을 패션에 접목하여 실물 작품을 제작한 본 연구가 패션디자인의 영역에 도움이 될 수 있는 계기가 됨은 물론, 패션산업의 발전에도 이바지할 것으로 보인다. 니트웨어는 앞으로 계속 사람들의 패션욕구에 부응할 것이므로, 다양한 문양에 관한 연구자들의 연구가 계속 이루어져야 할 것이다.;In contemporary fashion, knit wear is serving people’s demands not only for artistic formative beauty through its unique texture and various patterns but also for functionality through soft flexibility. Accordingly, many designers are developing a wide variety of knit wear patterns by applying handcraft techniques. Fashion designers should make continuous efforts to satisfy people’s changing fashion desires, and one of such efforts is the use of famous paintings as motifs for research and design. Thus, this study designed knit wear using patterns in the paintings of Gustav Klimt known as a master in art nouveau, selecting those painted during his best days. Klimt’s paintings not only express expressionistic and symbolic images but also produce a mysterious power through elegance and liberality. In particular, various lines and geometric decorations of art nouveau style used by Klimt have formative features applicable also to fashion images. The objective of this study is to develop materials of unique and rich texture by applying the patterns and using techniques such as stitching, pelting, knitting and patchwork, and to expand the expression area of highly formative knit wear design by imaging the artistic patterns of Klimt’s paintings in harmony with knit wear. As to the contents and methods of this study, first, we examined Klimt’s life and the characteristics, colors and patterns of his paintings through literature review, and borrowed motifs from various patterns and colors of Klimt’s paintings. Furthermore, as a part of general review of knit wear, we studied cases of recent patterning techniques including hand knitting, machine knitting, patchwork, embroidery, and printing through literature review and Internet materials. Then, literature on manufacturing techniques such as patchwork and applique were studied, and today’s trends were surveyed and analyzed, and based on the theoretical background, eight pieces of knit wear were created. In order to implement Klimt’s painting images in dress, we introduced pieced patchwork and applique patchwork techniques using water‐soluble non‐woven fabric to knitting. The created actual works included half coat, one‐piece, jacket and skirt, and patterns used in the pieces were circle, triangle, rectangle, whirl, etc. used commonly in Klimt’s paintings. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. First, in the results of examining the paintings of Gustav Klimt who played a leading role in the development of art nouveau style, we found that organic lines and various geometric patterns revealing well the characteristics of art nouveau can be used as rich decorative motifs of clothes design. Second, clothes of diverse images could be created using various colors including gold appearing relatively frequently in Klimt’s paintings as well as ivory giving a subtle feeling and strong colors such as red, black and blue. In addition, mono‐tone ivory and varieties of gold were used in order to emphasize the lines and shapes of patterns notable in Klimt’s paintings, and the patterns and lines of the paintings were embossed in combination with simple silhouettes. Third, in introducing mosaic patterns in Klimt’s paintings, we patched various materials through stitch using water‐soluble non‐woven fabric. Through this, we could express patterns of dense composition freely and produce a rich effect of texture contrast. Fourth, for richer expression of artistic images in Klimt’s paintings, we developed knit wear patterns of unique textures by designing and patching motifs through combining various techniques such as stitching, pelting and knitting. This study designed and made eight pieces of knit wear with motifs obtained from various patterns in Klimt’s paintings, and as a result, we could create knit wear of diverse and rich textures. As it made actual clothes by introducing the images and patterns of famous paintings to fashion, this study is expected to contribute to the area of fashion design and to promote the development of the fashion industry. As knit wear will keep serving people’s fashion desires, there should be continuous research on various patterns.
