Abstract
This thesis studies 10th grade students' understanding of a concept of a variable and how a concept of an unknown that students use in the process of problem solving, obscures the understanding of the variable regarding functional relations. In order to attain its goal, the following research questions have been established. 1. how do 10th grade students understand the concept of a variable? 2. as an unknown, how does the concept of a variable affects the understanding of a variable concept as a relationship (between the quantities) in studying functions? The current curriculum introduces the definition of a variable concept at 7th grade period. In 8th grade period, first-order equations and first-order functions that have two unknowns are introduced. For the subject of the study, this study selected 10th grades students all of who have studied the concept of a variable and a first-orde function and have their own definition and image of it as they used its concept is solving various problems. To answer above research questions, three classes of a high school located at the Gyeonggi Province has been selected as survey samples. Based on the test that has been made by analyzing Kim (1992) and Malisani (2006)’s studies, this study analyzed the test results by using frequencies and percentages of students’ responsiveness on questions. Students’ responses on each question has been analyzed. Based on the result, the level of students’ understanding of a variable concept and how the concept of an unknown obstructs the understanding of a concept of a variable in relation to functions has been analyzed. The result of the analysis on 10thgradestudents’ understanding of a concept of a variable is as follows. First, many students were considering as constants, not as variables. It implies that in a given equation, while many students observe as a variable, they fail to consider as variables. To put it differently, in real situations, students were not applying the fact that the character are variables that can be replaced by many values. Second, students think that the variable substitutes the values and should be expressed in letters. For example, in , students didn't recognize the fact that are variables. Since numbers cannot be substituted into , they tend to think that cannot be variables. Third, students tend to think that only the letter, can be variables. This is because the letter are mostly used in the section on equations and functions. Since they do not usually see other letters in the textbook, they unconsciously think that the variables that represent the letter are . The result of the analysis on how the concept of an unknown obstructs the understanding of a variable in relation to functions are as follows. Following is the summary of the result of an analysis on a variable concept understanding regarding the use of a concept of an unknown. First, it was observable that as to studying functions, the concept of a variable as an unknown obstructs the understanding of a variable concept in terms of relationship between quantities. When the concept of a variable as an unknown has been applied, students failed to regard the concept of a variable as a functional relationship and committed a mistake of obtaining only one solution. From this result, we can confirm that the concept of an unknown that students use makes it difficult to switch over from Küchemann's level of letter understanding 3 (understanding the letter as an unknown) to the level of letter understanding 4 (interpreting the letter as a generalized number or variables). Second, the concept that students hark back to in the process of problem solving depends on the context of the given problem. Students interpreted differently with respect to the context and approached differently. This shows that students failed to apply the concept of a variable properly in a first-order equation with two variables. Moreover, it implies that when applying the concept of a variable in solving problems, they are susceptible to the context. Thus, we can conclude that the concept of a variable that students hark back to in the process of problem solving depends on the context. From answers on and that are similar to previous problems, it was observable that students are interpreting the letter differently according to the context. In , students solved the problem with the Küchemann's level of letter understanding 3 (understanding the letter as an known). On the other hand, in , they solved the problem with the level of letter understanding 4 (interpreting the letter as a generalized number or variables). This shows that students fail to properly understand the concept of a variable and that the concept of a variable is affected heavily on the context of the problem. Therefore, we can conclude that the concept that students use in solving the problems depends on the context. Furthermore, we can verify the fact that the concept of an unknown that students use obstructs the transferring from Küchemann's level of letter understanding 3 (understanding the letter as an known) to the next level (interpreting the letter as a generalized number or variables). Following suggestions are made to complement this study's limitations and restrictions and for the sake of future research. First, using the 117 10th grade students as a subject of the study, this thesis studied how the understanding of the concept of a variable and an unknown obstructs the understanding of a variable in functional relationship. Accordingly, this study should be complemented with much more wider scope of study for it has restrictions in regards to the subject of study and the area of research. Second, it was observable from this study that students easily hark back to the concept of a variable in functional relationship. Research on not only the context that represents the functional relationship but also the algebraic context, where students can easily raise the concept of a variable, should be conducted.;본 논문은 변수 개념에 대한 고등학교 1학년 학생들의 이해도를 조사하고 문제 해결 과정에서 학생들이 사용하는 미지수로서의 변수 개념이 함수적 관계에서 변수 개념의 이해에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 알아보고자 한다.
