Female farmers’ participation in agricultural extension services has increased in many parts of the world. However, socio-cultural restrictions based on gender ideology often impede them from an active participation. It is therefore still questionable whether active participation of women has been achieved. In Cambodia, less female participation is also observed because of traditional gender roles assigned to women. However, Cambodian women are more likely to engage in community life such as wedding, funeral, voluntary road construction in the local community, while men participate at local, provincial and national political levels as village chiefs, commune chiefs, district chiefs, provincial governors, ambassadors and as members of government, members of parliament and senators etc. So, due to traditional gender roles, women, when provided opportunities to attend any training courses such as farming school and agricultural extension services , can not concentrate very well and they are often concerned with the matters of their family members. This study takes stock on secondary data, gathering related documents on the topic from previous researchers and practitioners, who worked closely with farmers in the fields of gender mainstreaming in agricultural extension services in Cambodia. This paper aims to study women's participation in agricultural extension services and find out the reasons for less female participation by drawing on the experiences of MoWA–JICA project and methods to further promote their participation in agricultural extension services effectively. This research found that women’s participation in agricultural extension services has been noticeably increasing from year to year since the second mandate of Royal Government of Cambodia in 1998, but remains very small because they involve behind the scene through their husbands, who are heads of the families. They have had difficulties and poor quality in participating in agricultural extension services. The promotion of women’s participation in agricultural extension services is on the right track but still needs more time to improve. This thesis recommends that awareness raising and capacity building should be continued, while trying hard to increase women’s participation in agricultural extension services by providing support and encouragement to women participation through efforts and commitments from government, community and their families members.-
