Since the 1970s Microfinance has become an important worldwide tool in the fight against poverty. It has especially been seen as an antipoverty tool that is also women friendly. In Rwanda, the critical role of microfinance has been recognized in the poverty reduction paper as well as Rwanda vision 2020, where microfinance is being emphasized as one of the pillars to promote private entrepreneurship and boost the economy of the country. In addition, the Rwandan Government has placed high priority on the importance of the involvement of women in national development. The fact that Rwanda has the highest women representation in parliament signals the government’s commitment to establishing women as a key resource in achieving national development goals in all aspects: political, economic and social. This paper is therefore an attempt to analyze the role of Microfinance in the empowerment of women in the Rwandan context. The paper uses a case study of Urwego Opportunity Microfinance Bank, one of largest microfinance institutions in terms of scale and geographical coverage. To achieve the desired objectives of this paper, an analysis of the following secondary data has been done: an impact assessment study of Urwego Opportunity Microfinance Banking and a FINSCOPE study on financial access in Rwanda. It has been observed that Microfinance outreach in scale is extensive and impacted positively on the poor women; factors such improvement in family welfare, education of children, family food security and change in neighbors’ mindset have been found to be highly influenced by the access of women to micro-credits. Consequently, even if it is not the sole pillar of women empowerment, microfinance is playing an important role in helping poor women to get onto the economic vehicle. By issuing small loans Microfinance not only decreases women’s vulnerability to poverty, but also contributes to improved household welfare. It has then been found that Micro credit definitely has had positive impact in empowering women as it improves their personnel welfare and that of their families.;1970년대 이후 Microfinance는 전세계적으로 빈곤퇴치를 위한 중요한 수단이 되어왔다.
