Impact of International Labor Migration, Remittance in household level

Abstract

Nepal is predominantly patriarchal society and women are generally treated as the second level citizens. However A recent feature of foreign labor migration is characterized by an active and remarkable participation of women labor force. The main objective of this study is to assess the contribution made by the remittance of Nepalese migrant women workers on their household economy. This study attempts are also made to analyze the financial aspects to explore the human factors, and to examine different behavioral pattern of male and female migrant workers in spending; saving and sending money back to home etc. It was discovered that opportunity to work aboard brought positive changes in their roles and identities. The study show that the women migrants are mostly engaged in low skilled jobs, particularly domestic work. Women migrant workers are found to be more responsible and sensitive in terms of saving and spending money than male migrants. Despite the restriction made by the Government of Nepal for the women migrant laborers in Gulf countries, the number of outgoing women migrant workers is increasing day by day. It is also interesting that foreign employment is one of the important means which provides opportunities for women to make their situation better by achieving greater independency, self-confidence and improved socio-economic status of their family. Thus, their contribution in total remittances could not represent the actual data. Additionally, during this study it was also found that the women migrant workers were unaware of their labor rights whereas men workers are better off and conscious about the labor union and labor rights. This study reveals that most of the remittances are spent for basic needs, children’s education and medical care of family members. But men and women migrant workers have different priorities while spending their saving. It also found that education level of migrant workers and their knowledge about their work, language efficiency of destination countries are instrumental to lead to increased earning capacity and expertise in work. Thus, Government of Nepal should adopt measures to provide civic education on safe migration especially for women whose contribution to the economy is also significant.;가부장적 사회인 네팔에서 일반적으로 여성은 중요하지 않은 존재로 여겨진다. 그러나 최근의 해외노동 이주 양상은 여성의 적극적이고 활발한 노동시장 참여를 특징적으로 나타내고 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 해외 이주 네팔 여성이 자국으로 보내는 송금액이 그들의 가족경제에 미치는 영향을 측정하는 것이다. 이 논문은 또한 이주 노동 남성과 여성의 송금액수와 그들의 소비 행태의 차이점 등 재정적인 측면도 분석한다. 연구의 결과 해외 이주 노동은 그들의 역할과 정체성 변화에 긍정적인 변화를 일으켰다는 점이 밝혀졌다. 여성 이주 노동자들은 대부분 저임금 단순 노동직 특히 가정부로서 일하고 있다. 여성 이주 노동자들은 남성보다 더 많이 저축하고 덜 소비한다. 네팔 정부가 여성들의 중동 지역 국가로의 이주를 제한하는 데도 불구하고, 해외로 나가는 여성들이 매일 증가 하고 있다. 해외에서의 취업이 여성들의 더 많은 자유와, 자신감, 그리고 그들 가족의 사회경제적 지위를 상승시키는데 중요한 수단이 되고 있다. 그밖에, 남성에 비해 여성 이주 노동자들은 그들의 노동권리와 노동조합에 대한 이해가 낮다. 이 논문은 대부분의 해외송금액이 기본적인 욕구와 자녀의 교육 그리고 가족의 건강을 위해 사용되고 있다는 점을 밝히고 있다. 남성과 여성 이주 노동자들은 돈의 사용처에 대한 우선 순위를 다르게 보고 있다. 이주 노동자들의 교육 수준과 직업에 대한 지식, 이주한 나라의 언어 구사 수준이 그들의 수입과 일의 전문성을 결정하는 중요한 수단이다. 따라서, 네팔 정부는 안전한 해외 이주를 위해, 특히 그들의 송금이 네팔 경제에 중요한 공헌을 하는 여성 이주자들을 위한 교육을 제공해야 한다.
