Women Political Empowerment as an Instrument for Sustainable Development in Rwanda

Abstract

This research examines the relationship between women political empowerment and economic development in Rwanda. The researcher uses a comparativehistorical research design focusing mainly on the period before and after Rwandan genocide in 1994. The research presents the improvements that have been achieved in education, employment and economic growth as a result of women empowerment. Contribution of women to sustainable development comes as a result of women sensitization, setting or amendment of laws which encourage women participation in community service. Apart from that the study shows that women in power on the macro level contribute actively to Rwanda’'s policy to promote reconciliation, peace and stability and those conditions are prerequisite for investment and economic development, which in turn are prerequisites to improvements in welfare.;이 연구는 르완다에서 여성의 정치역량강화 (political empowerment)와 경제발전과의 상관관계를 분석한다. 이 논문은 1994 년 인종대학살 사건 이전과 이후 기간에 초점을 두고 비교-역사적 분석틀을 사용하였다. 이 논문은 여성의 역량강화 결과 교육, 취업, 경제성장 달성이 증진 되었다는 점을 보여준다. 지속 가능한 개발에 대한 여성의 기여는 여성문제에 대한 적극적 반응, 여성의 지역사회 참여를 권장하는 법개정의 결과로 나타났다. 이와는 별도로, 이 논문은 거시적 차원에서의 여성의 정치 참여가 화해, 평화 및 안정을 증진시키기 위한 르완다의 정책에 적극적으로 기여하였으며, 이러한 여성의 역할이 국민복지를 위한 경제발전의 선결조건이라는 점을 강조한다.
