Abstract
The attention upon English Immersion Programs and schools adapting such programs are increasing in Korea. As a method of language education, Immersion programs are to use a second language as a means of learning other subjects. The second language is used only as a tool of communication, not as a subject. While a second language is used as a tool of communication in learning other subjects, it is important that all of the contents of the subject is covered. Thus, in order to make Immersion programs useful and effective, there has to be plenty of research done before carrying it out. The purpose of this study is to observe an English immersed mathematics class of 10th grade and survey the students and teacher that participate in it. It is to investigate the difficulties and advantages the students or the teacher experience in an English immersed mathematics class and find an efficient method of teaching high school mathematics, applying an English Immersion Program. The whole study was designed into two steps. Firstly, a first step study of an English immersed mathematics class was conducted. Data was collected through recordings, student surveys, and class observations of four classes of 'sets'. The classes were recorded and made as a script which was analyzed afterwards. As a result of the first step study, it turned out that students were satisfied with the English immersed program in terms of learning English and learning mathematical terms in a new way-in English. Learning in English made the subject more interesting and motivated some of the students as well. On the other hand, the difficulties that were pointed out were also due to the use of English. Students found learning mathematics in English confusing and had difficulties with new English math terms. Some students pointed out that using English as the teaching language limited the depth and level of the mathematical contents that are dealt in classes. Several suggestions were made by the students as a better way to conduct English immersed mathematic classes. First, they suggested to go through English math terms before learning the concepts in English. Second, they suggested to learn the main concepts in Korean first and then in English after acquiring the English math terms. To solve more problems in both English and Korean was also suggested. The second step study was conducted regarding these results and suggestions derived from the first step study. After four classes of 'functions' which were planned and designed differently and carefully designed based on the results of the first study, a second student survey was done. The survey consisted of three questions. First, it asked the students if they thought the new type of English immersed class of 'functions' showed a difference compared to the type of English immersed classes done on 'sets'. If so, it asked how much the class was improved regarding to what they suggested to be changed for a more efficient English immersed mathematics class. Secondly, it asked if these changes lessened any difficulties the students pointed out earlier in the first step study. And for the last, it asked the students which of the two types of English immersed classes they prefer. As a result, the students thought that the class was improved in most of the categorized suggestions. Many of the students pointed out that the class was improved in terms of acquiring new English mathematical terms before learning in English and previewing the contents in Korean first and using Korean when explaining complicated concepts. And as a result of this change, the students' confusion occurred by the use of English was lessened. The difficulties occurred by not knowing the English mathematical terms were declined. Moreover, it turned out to be that 69.6% of the students that responded to the survey preferred the English immersed mathematics class done on 'functions' in the second step study. With these results, we can conclude that first, to carry out an English immersed mathematics class in high school math, it is important to make sure the students acknowledge the math terms in English before learning the concepts in English. Second, it is effective to preview the main concepts in Korean and then in English after acquiring the English math terms so that there could be a connection between terms and concepts. To solve more problems in both English and Korean is also a useful plan in designing English immersed high school mathematics classes. On the other hand, there should also be support with research on curriculum and resources that could be used in English immersed classes. Because there is no such textbooks nor resources yet to be used, it takes too much time and effort for a single teacher to plan and prepare every detail of an English immersed mathematics class on his or her own. Thus, support should be given by a governmental level. Moreover, special training and support should be applied for teachers in order to understand the Korean high school mathematics curriculum and at the same time be able to teach in English.
