Abstract
Today, advertising is considered not only as selling products but also as cultural phenomena in which cultural value and standards of society are reflected. That is to say, advertising reflects of changed cultural value that has been already existing, besides economic functions. This thesis analysis Korean and U. S. A. TV commercials that are different in many aspects, on the assumption that advertising reflects their own cultures. Hofstede's cultural model is used as a tool for analyzing cultures in this study. The validity of Hofstede's cultural model was proved in many other studies from a variety of disciplines. To compare cultures, Hofstede distinguishes cultures according to five dimensions: individualism versus collectivism, power distance, masculinity versus feminity, uncertainty avoidance and long- term orientation. According to Hofsgede's study Korea in a country of collectivism, large power distance, strong uncertainty avoidance, feminity and long-term orientation and U. S. A. The opposites. This thesis focuses on collectivism and individualism in Korean and U. S. A TV commercials. This is because collectivism and individualism have regarded as the major dimension of cultural variability identified by theorists across disciplines. On the bases of scholar's studies on individualism and collectivism, collectivistic appeals and individualistic appeals to analyze advertising are classified as follows: appeals of collectivism expresses of emphasizes on family integrity, group goals, other's happiness. interdependent relationships to others and advertising by symbols of psychological appeals: appeals of individualism expresses or emphasizes on individuality, personal goals, consumer's benefits, leadership of heroism and advertising by disputes or facts. The hypotheses for analysis are as follows: hypothesis 1) in comparing all products, Korean TV commercials usually uses collectivistic appeals. which U. S. A. TV commercials usually uses individualistic appeals. hypothesis 2-1) in the case of high-involvement products, Korean TV commercials uses collecrivistic appeals, which U. S. A Tv commercials uses individualistic appeals. hypothesis 2-2) in the case of low-involvement products, there's no particular difference in using appeals about individuality of appeals about collectivism. The result of this study supports hypothesis 1) and 2-1), not hypothesis 2-2). That is because Korean TV commercials usually use appeals about collectivism and U, S, A. TV commercials usually use appeals about individuality in ho호-involvement and low-involvement products. Therefore, It is proved that advertising reflects peculiar cultures of their country. But the result of this study tells us that even Korean TV commercials used appeals about collectivism much more than appeals about individuality, there's just little difference. As we can know through these various cultural studies, nowadays, spreads of individualism became a general trend in society, this change gradually makes Korean TV commercials reflect individualism changing from collectivism. This thesis presented the actual proof that advertising reflects the value of culture in the society and introduced advertising by different cultures. This thesis is expected to be a starting point to study other cultural dimensions through advertising to grasp various cultural characteristics.
