앤드로지너스 룩을 응용한 셔츠 디자인

Abstract

At the moment when we were born, we were given a physiological sex, male or female. When we grew up, we obtained socio-cultural gender. In this course, an absolutely accepted conventional wisdom has established that a man has masculine characteristics and a woman has feminine ones. However, in complex and pluralistic society today, there has been a desire for more perfect reasonable human being having characteristics of both sexes, not a dichotomous human defined by men and women, and around the 1990’s, women’s rights began to be improved, leading to their active participation in social activities, and changes in their role in our society have brought about a change in fashion trends. In addition, the changing gender role recognition has influenced men’s wear, and as a result, men began to reject being a strong man, giving up their status as a controller, but to establish a new sort of sex identity. The change has resulted in the appearance of the androgynous look, and the idea ‘androgynous’ mixing spiritual masculinity and feminine aspects began to be reflected on fashion. The pursuit for personality and free feelings of individuality will drive the progress of the androgynous look, taking different forms with the passage of time and demands of each period. This study aims to express the androgynous image via shirts as a fashion item. Shirts are widely worn as a fashion item regardless of sex and age, with growing importance as a casual outer, with the increase in leisure activities driven by the recent implementation of the 5-Day Work Week system in Korea. Therefore, this study suggests a new dimension of plasticity of men’s shirts for today and applies it to contemporary fashion trends to develop various items by applying androgynous images. Conclusions of this study are as follows: First, the study found that meanings of symbolism in clothing continue to change, not fixed at all, depending on historic and cultural environments, and so does symbolism for femininity and masculinity of clothing. In complex and pluralistic society today, dualistic division of sexes is meaningless, and the need for open-mindedness to accept advantages of sex is growing. Instead of biased views on sexuality, the androgynous look putting an emphasis on free feelings and individuality is expected to persist in the future, taking different forms. Second, shirts are widely worn as a fashion item regardless of sex and age, with growing importance as a casual outer, with the increase in leisure activities driven by the recent implementation of the 5-Day Work Week system in Korea. Currently, there are various shirts in diverse colors and patterns on the market as an outer, and with the help of the development of processing technology and invention of new materials, the scope of their use is expanding gradually. Apart from diversity of colors and patterns, however, a shirt tends to remain in its basic design in most cases, only with changes in the form such as collars and cuffs depending on fashion trends and tastes. The study showed that the ‘androgynous’ idea and a shirt as a fashion item can be combined to present a new design concept. Third, two patters were used for the work in this study in order to emphasize its form, along with mono color white and stripe patterns. For materials, cotton and blend as a most basic material for a shirt were used with unique variations in the form. Fourth, decorative details or trimming such as ribbon tying methods, shirring, attaching in layers, and irregular pleading widely used for women’s wear were applied, and silhouettes with strong drape feelings were used to add feminine feature to men’ shirts, in an effort to propose a fashion design of the androgynous look. Fifth, clothes proposed in this study are different from feminine clothing item blouse, because they are androgynous shirts mixing masculinity and femininity. Stiff pads were used in collars and cuffs characteristics of men’s traditional shirts to maintain masculinity of a shirt, and design was developed by adding feminine decorative elements, which is different from women’s blouse. Moreover, characteristics of the androgynous shirts were well expressed by having male models wear the clothes for perfect harmony of feminine elements in the clothes and the model’s masculinity. It is expected that the study can make a contribution to the extensive studies on shirts design of the androgynous image using various decoration techniques.;사람들은 태어나는 순간 남자와 여자라는 생리학적 성(sex)을 갖게 되고, 성장해가면서 사회문화적인 성(gender)을 획득해 나가게 된다. 이런 과정에서 남자는 남성성을, 여자는 여성성을 가져야 한다는 고정관념은 절대적 의미로 당연시되어 왔다. 그러나, 복잡하고 다원화된 현대사회로 들어서면서 남성과 여성이라는 이분법적인 인간형이 아닌 양성의 특징을 모두 소유한 보다 완벽한 이성적(理性的)인 인간에 대한 욕구가 생겨났으며, 1900년을 전후하여 일어난 여권의 신장은 여성들의 사회활동을 증가시켰고 사회에서 수행하는 역할의 변화는 의복의 변화로까지 이어지게 되었다. 이와 더불어 성역할에 대한 인식의 변화는 남성복에도 영향을 끼쳤는데 지배자적 위치에 있던 남성들은 더 이상 강한 남성이 되기를 거부했고 새로운 성 정체성을 확립하기에 이르렀다. 이러한 변화의 결과는 남자와 여자가 아닌 개개인의 개성과 감성을 중요시하는 앤드로지너스 룩의 출현을 가능하게 했으며 정신적인 남성성과 여성성의 결합이라는 앤드로지너스의 관념이 복식이라는 도구를 통해 표현된 것이다. 개개인의 개성과 자유로운 감성의 추구는 앤드로지너스 룩의 발전을 계속해서 가능하게 할 것이며 시대의 변화와 요구에 따라 그 모습을 조금씩 달리 하며 발전해 갈 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 앤드로지너스 이미지를 셔츠라는 복식 아이템을 통해 표현하고자 하였다.셔츠는 성별과 연령에 관계없이 널리 애용되고 있는 아이템의 하나로 최근에는 주 5일제 근무로 인하여 레져 생활이 확대되면서 캐쥬얼한 겉옷으로서의 역할이 더욱 커지게 되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 앤드로지너스 이미지를 응용하여 현대 남성 셔츠의 새로운 조형성을 제시하고 현대 트렌드에 적용시켜 다양하게 전개해 보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결론의 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복식의 상징들이 가지고 있는 의미는 고정된 것이 아니고 시대적, 문화적 환경에 따라 변화하는데 복식이 가진 여성성과 남성성의 상징성도 계속 변화한다. 복잡하고 다원화된 현대 사회에서는 성의 이분법적 구분은 무의미하며 각자의 성이 가진 장점을 수용하고 받아드리는 열린 사고의 필요성이 커져가고 있다. 한쪽으로 치우친 성에 대한 고정관념을 갖기 보다는 자유로운 감성과 개개인의 개성을 중요시하는 앤드로지너스 룩은 앞으로도 그 모습을 달리하며 계속 될 것임을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 셔츠는 성별과 연령에 관계없이 널리 애용되고 있는 아이템의 하나로 최근에는 주 5일제 근무로 인하여 레져 생활이 확대되면서 캐쥬얼한 겉옷으로서의 역할이 더욱 커지게 되었다. 현재는 겉옷의 개념으로 다양한 색상과 무늬의 셔츠가 전개되고 있으며, 가공 기술의 발달과 새로운 소재의 개발 등으로 그 활용 범위가 점차 넓어지고 있다. 그러나 색상이나 무늬의 다양성과는 별개로 셔츠는 칼라와 커프스의 변화가 유행과 취향에 따라 변화할 뿐 형태적인 측면에서 셔츠는 기본형에서 크게 벗어나지 않는 복식 아이템이다. 앤드로지너스 라는 관념과 셔츠라는 복식 아이템이 만나 다양한 형태의 디자인의 제시가 가능 하다는 것을 인식 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 작품의 색채는 작품의 형태를 부각시키기 위해 단색의 화이트와 스트라이프 무늬 두 가지를 사용하였고 소재는 셔츠의 가장 기본적인 소재인 면과 혼방 두 가지 소재를 사용해 다양한 기법을 통한 형태의 변화를 강조하였다. 넷째, 여성복에서 많이 쓰이는 리본 형태의 묶기 기법, 셔링, 겹겹이 붙이기 기법, 불규칙한 주름 기법 등의 장식적인 디테일이나 트리밍을 응용하고, 드레이프 성이 강한 실루엣을 통해 남성 셔츠에 여성성을 표현하여 앤드로지너스 적인 의상 디자인을 제시할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 본 연구에서 제시한 의상들은 남성성과 여성성이 결합된 앤드로지너스 셔츠로써 여성의 복식 아이템인 블라우스와는 차별된다. 남성의 트레디셔널한 셔츠의 특징인 칼라와 커프스 부분에 단단한 심지를 사용하여 셔츠의 남성성을 유지한 체 여성적인 장식 요소들을 더하여 디자인을 전개하였다는 점에서 여성의 블라우스와는 다르다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 남성 모델이 착용하여 스타일링을 함으로써 의상에서 부각된 여성성의 요소들과 남성성이 잘 조화되어 앤드로지너스 이미지의 셔츠 디자인의 특성이 효과적으로 표현됨을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 계기로 다양한 장식 기법을 활용함으로써 앤드로지너스 이미지의 셔츠 디자인 연구가 더 활성화되기를 기대해본다.
