Claude Debussy의 "Suite bergamasque"에 관한 분석연구

Abstract

음악사적으로 볼 때 R. Wagner가 낭만음악의 정점을 이룩하여 기능화성의 종말을 고했다고 한다면, C. Debussy는 인상주의라는 새로운 예술관을 수립하여 현대음악에 이르는 가능성을 제시한 것으로 생각할 수가 있을 것이다. 그가 개발한 인상주의적 기법은 다방면의 음악작품에 걸쳐 엿볼 수가 있으나 특히, Piano 곡 분야에서 그의 특유의 감각적 색채가 찬란하게 빛나고 있다고 생각되어 초기 작품 중의 하나인 Piano 곡 Suite Bergamasque를 선정 분정 분석하여 인상주의로 향하는 과정을 연구하는 데 목적이 있다. 이 작품은 Prelude, Menuet Clair de Lune, 그리고 Passepied의 4곡으로 이루어진 조곡이다. 이와 같은 4곡을 분석해 본 결과 다음과 같은 여러 가지 특징이 있었다.

1. 선율 우선 음계는 Debussy 이전의 전통적인 장음계나 단음계를 사용하고 있지만, 중세 교회선법을 도입한 부분들이 있었다. 이런 기법은 그의 후기 음악에서 큰 특징의 하나로 지적되고 있는 바이나, 이 작품에서도 이미 그러한 경향을 나타내고 있다. 또 하나의 특징은 1~2 마디의 단편적인 주제들을 반복하면서 이어놓고 있는 것인데, 이것은 인상을 강하게 주기 위한 기법으로 해석된다. 또, 당김음(Syncopation)에 의한 rhythm 변화로서 마디가 갖는 강약의 기능을 파괴하려는 움직임이 보였다.

2. 화성 Debussy는 R. Wagner와 달리 기능에 의한 반음계 사용을 하지 않고 자유로운 대조의 성격을 가진 화음들을 많이 사용하였으며, 괘류음과 부가화음을 많이 사용하여 색채를 강하게 하고 있었다. 또한, Pedal point가 자연스럽게 사용되었고 동형진행(Sequence)으로서 보다 자유로운 화음과 조바꿈을 구사하였다. 그러나 그의 후기 작품에서 크게 나타나고 있는 5음 음계나 온음계는 아직 사용하지 않고 있었다. 4도 구성 화음과 5도 구성 화음도 또한 없었다.

3. 음향 Homophony, Polyphony들의 사용이 적절하고 성부와 성부 사이, 혹은 고음과 저음을 밀집시키거나 몇 octave이상 크게 도약시켜 Piano 악기가 가진 음색을 독특하게 사용하였으며, 음형을 자주 바꾸어 대비성을 강조하여 주제가 다시 반복될 때에도 보다 다양한 변화를 꾀하여 참신한 인상을 갖도록 하였다. 그리고 Staccato, Staccatissimo, Legato, Tenuto 등의 섬세한 표현력을 보이며 이것들이 서로 적절한 위치에서 Soft pedal의 사용과 함께 음색 및 연주효과의 변화를 꾀하였다.

4. 형식 거의가 복합 3부분 형식으로 사용되어 1개 곡을 단위로 균형미를 찾고 있으며, 여기에 Sonata 형식과 Rondo 형식 등의 다른 형식을 절충하여 형식상의 균형미를 이루었다. 이와 같은 기법들로서 Debussy의 Suite Bergamasque는 그의 초기의 대표적인 작품이다.;In the music history, R. Wagner built the climax of the Romanticism. And he brought the end of functional harmony in music. But C. Debussy built the new music mode, Impressionism. And he brought the music into the modern music. In his many musical works, we can find the techniques of Impressionism. Especially, in his piano works, he represented his characteristic and sensational color well. So I chose one of his early piano works, "Suite Bergamasque." And I analyze it. Through its analysis, I could study the progress of his Impressionism. This work is a suite that has four movements which are Prelude, Menuet, Passepied and Clair de Lune that is very famous with deep Impressionism. I analyzed above four parts. In these analysis, I found several characteristics.

1. Melody First, he used the traditional Major and minor scale. But I find the part which he brought Doria mode, one of medieval church mode in Prelude. Such a mode is one of his big characteristics in his later musical works. In this work, "Suite Berga masque" he represents such a mode. His another typical mode is Debussy's mosaic-like form which is made to convey a series of sensations and to convey a single main impression with great intensity. And I could find a sign that he was trying to break the function of the strong and the weak of rhythm come from syncopation. I could not find the whole tone scale or pentationic scale which he represented in his later works.

2. Harmony Debussy is much different from R. Wagner. He used the chromatic scale that had no function. He made the chords more bland and the progressions less functional. He used many chords which are free contrast characteristic. Especially suspension and added chords. And the musical color is strong and deep. He used natural pedal point and sustained tone. In sequence, he used variant chord and modulation. But in this work, I could not find the chords consisting of superimposed fourth and fifth.

3. Sonority His contrast about monophony, homophony and polyphony is very good. He closed up the high tone and low tone or the space between part and part. He leaped a few octaves. He made the extensive compass in keyboard of piano. He made the wonderful tone of piano. He changed the form often and emphasize the contrast. So he made various changes whenever the theme was repeated. So his musical works are very fresh and wonderful. I could find the sensitive expressions in the staccato, staccatissimo, legato and tenuto. And they are used with a sordino in suitable position. And he brought the sensitive exploitation of timbre.

4. Form In these works, he used the compound three part form. He made an unit with each tune and represented a good balance. He also made a balance in his form mixing two other forms which are Sonata form and Rondo form. And he made a new function and value in the composed section.

Debussy composed "Suite Bergamasque" using these techniques. So his first work "Suite Bergamasque" is his characteristic piano work.
