Thomas Hardy의 숙명론적 여성들

Abstract

Thomas Hardy의 Wessex Novel이 제시하는 소우주(Microcosm)에는 “Immanent Will”이라고 하는 내재의지가 구심을 이루고 있다. Wessex 지방의 인물들은 불가사의하게 우주에 편재해 있는 이 내재의지의 끈에 매달려 꼭두각시처럼 조종을 받고 있다. 그래서 인간의 삶은 무자비하고 냉담한 조물주가 보여주는 맹목적 내재의지와 끊임없이 투쟁하는 것의 연속이라고 한다. 이렇게 인생이란 생존을 위한 투쟁의 연속이지만 Hardy 자신은 항상 비극적인 세계관으로만 일관하지는 않고 있다. Hardy 자신이 말한 대로 그는 Pessimist라기 보다는 Meliorist(개선주의자)로써 좀 더 나은 인간세상을 염원했었다. 그의 이러한 개선설적인 인생관은 작중인물을 통해 잘 그려져 있음을 볼 수 있다. 특히 작중인물들 중에서도 남성보다는 여성쪽에 무자비한 “Immanent Will”의 꼭두각시적인 운명을 더욱 편중시켰고 아울러 여성들의 끈기 있고 힘찬 투쟁력을 보여 주고 있다. 그의 여주인공들의 이러한 투쟁은 인간사회나 환경자체뿐만 아니라 우주의 초자연적인 힘에 대항하는 싸움이라고도 할 수 있다. 여성인물들이 당시의 운명과 사회의 희생물이 되긴 했어도 운명을 받아들이는 여성들은 수동적이거나 전근대적이 아니며 Tess의 정신적 순수성을 위한 굳센 투쟁력은 Victoria 시대의 봉건 사회에 새로운 도덕적 가치를 부여하는 근원이 되었다. 다시 말해서 Tess와 같은 여성은 사회와 인간생활의 제물(Scape goat)로써 King Lear가 부르짖듯 “more sinned against than sinning” 즉 자기 자신이 스스로 죄를 범했다기 보다는 주위의 모든 환경이 그녀로 하여금 죄를 짓도록 만들어 준 비극적 운명의 주인공이었다. 그러나 그녀는 "Why am I on the wrong side of this door?"라고 절규하면서도 힘찬 투쟁력을 보여 줌으로써 인간이 사회에 가져올 수 있는 가능성을 보여 주었다. Tess나 Sue Bridehead나 또 Eustacia Vye 같은 이례적인 여성들을 「Mouth - Piece」로 하여 인간이 당하는 고뇌를 최소한으로 경감시키고, 개선하는 길은 사고와 행동의 진실함과 아울러 이 세상을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 이겨나가는 것이라고 Hardy는 독자에게 말해 주고 있다.;Thomas Hardy's Wessex novels and their microcosm center mostly around the "Immanent Will". This "Will" controls Hardy's characters as puppet-masters do their puppets. In other words, the "Will" poses as an inscrutably omnipresent god through the universe of Hardy's novels. Thus the life of human being is bound to be a continuous struggle against this god, the "merciless" Immanent Will. "Merciless" it is, because it leaves human being to suffer the fate predetermined and renders no providence at all. Though life is a series of struggles for existence, Hardy is trying to show in his novel a melioristic view rather than that of a pessimist. In other words, he aspires for a better world by calmly facing man's fate and thereby overcoming the miseries given to him. Hardy's melioristic view of life is well represented by his characters, specially female ones. What is conspicuous about his characters is that most of the female characters are more seriously affected by the merciless Immanent Will than male characters. This fact bears witness to the strengths of woman's patient struggle against her fate. Although females were the victims of the contemporary society and its civilization, Hardy's women do not passively surrender themselves to their fate. On the contrary, as in the case of Tess, the struggle for ger spiritual purity becomes the foundation of the new morality in the Victorian Feudalism. By presenting such unusual female characters as Tess, Sue Bridehead, and Eustacia Vye as a mouth-piece of his views, Hardy tells us that man can minimize his sufferings and improve his world by honesty, sincerity and calmness, each of which enables him to accept and withstand the world as it is.
