(An) essay of dramatic poesy its significance & value

Abstract

Dryden‘s merit as a critic lies less in his general theory than his practical approach to the problem immediately before him. An Essay of Dramatic Poesy is set in a form a dialogue discussing ancient and modern dramas, French and English dramas, as well as blank verse and rhyme. Dryden here show many possible approaches to drama, but does not reach any final conclusion. The positions represented by the four participants in the dialogue seem to complement rather than defeat each other and the Essay as a whole does not sustain any particular opinion. It seems rather to stress the process of theoretical reasoning by which it is reached and this is consistent with the scepticism characteristic of Dryden's mind. The Essay also explores the qualities of craftsmanship which make a play better than another as well as the "means" by which the "end" is achieved. With all their differences of opinions, the four debators concur in the importance of "decorum" as a rule for imitating nature properly in dramatic poetry, and in the process of their debate it somehow becomes clear that English drama and rhyme are respectively superior to French drama and blank verse. In the final analysis, however, the significance and value may be said to lie chiefly in that it is the first comprehensive discussion ever made by an English critic as to the relative merits of ancient and modern dramas.
