Abstract
Modern dancing does not stick to a rule, but gives great emphasis to individuality. So it is playing a major role to improve our expression and imagination. It is not simply a movement or a technique to show, but is a beautiful or intellectual expression of one's cherished emotion. So in modern dancing, it is the character, the sense of the times, the naturalness that count. At the beginning of twenty centuries, Isadora Duncan initiated modern dancing that opposed the form of the classic ballet. But her revolution was kind of mental one in which the emotional atmosphere was described. Any remodeling of the plot or the technic was not tried in her reformation. That's why her idea of modern dancing discontinued and didn't give nay contribution to the American modern dancing. A contemporary American dancer, Ruth St. Denis expressed her originality in her dancing, wielded the creative movements and made it a perfect artistic work. Her style of dancing was succeeded to Denishawn School and systematized. Many excellent dancers were brought out of this school, and accordingly it quickened the spread of modern dancing. The purpose of this study is showed arts and life of St. Denis who have affected in developing of modern dancing as well as consideration about history of American modern dance. This study is to give you the concept of modern dancing, to seek into the two persons who influenced the inceptive American modern dancing theoretically, and the two persons influenced by them, and after all to observe th achievements of Ruth St. Denis who practically create modern dancing. Modern dancing is an expressive and creative work of art developed in unison with the senses of the time. As its medium is the human body and its material is made out of nature, there is no way but to create it only by the human spirit which is also a component of nature. Adopting Delsarte's "mine" and Dalcroze's "Eurhythmics", Duncan and St. Denis danced a mental dance in nature by bodily rhythmic expression. But only the latter brought up American modern dancing into an independent art. The following are her achievements: 1. She was deeply touched spiritually by Oriental things and this made her create a religious dancing based on a drama mood. Her dancing was a variant of occidental dancing under the influence of Oriental one. 2. She was very influential in developing the esthetic Oriental, religious dancing into the American Christian dancing. 3. The establishment of Denishawn School is also one of her accomplishments. Martha, Graham; Doris, Humphrey; Charles, Weidman were from this school and the wide world was their stages. Their techniques have a great influence upon the modern dancing. In conclusion, St. Denis made the U. S. citizens know what dancing is. She created the proper American style of dancing, and she was the forerunner in distributing modern dancing throughout the world as well as the U. S.
