Abstract
I(The Lord of the Rings I, 2001)>을 주제로 하여 그의 음악적 스타일을 연구하고, 표현기법이 영상의 내용을 전달함에 있어서 어떠한 기능과 역할을 하는지 알아보고자 하였다. As the film music is recognized as an important genre of art in the 21st century, it begins to not only play the subsidiary function of expressing the narratives for video images but also play a central role in combination with the film. The purpose of this study was to examine the film musician Howard Shore's (1946~) "The Lord of the Rings I" (2001) for his musical styles and the functions and roles of the expressive techniques in delivering the contents of video images. "The Lord of the Rings I" is a work reputed for Howard Shore's unique music styles, so this study focused on his own unique musical characteristics in terms of the features of the film music. For this purpose, the researcher reviewed the history of the film music chronologically. Then, the researcher examined Howard Shore's life, the background and styles of his music, and thereupon, analyzed compositions, forms and characteristics of the music by scene, focusing on the villages and characters showing up according to development of the story. The film "The Lord of the Rings I" is based on Tolkien's original novel "The Lord of the Rings," a story created by him about a new world. The film develops centered about the rings, while such components as characters, culture and history are depicted realistically and clearly. As a result of this study, it was found that Howard Shore attempted to describe in a more realistic way the world created with music to help understand the complicated story. Development of the music is centered about short motivational themes connoting the unique characteristics of villages and characters. Such elements attach a sense of unity to the music, helping the audience to understand the contents of the work easily. In addition, as the story develops, the themes are linked with each other, while those themes containing some important contents are related with each other through the relationships among musical intervals. Such characteristics are highlighted across the music together with the sound effects of the discords, the percussional effects of human voices and the dynamic changes, while playing a role of hinting the internal conflicts among characters or the dramatic confrontation between good and evil. It was confirmed through this study that Howard Shore's music was not a simple background music; it explained about the temporal and spatial backgrounds, reflecting characters' inner psychology. Above all, his music followed the structure of the story to develop, obscuring the boundary between video images and music and delivering the themes effectively. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will research into the film music from more diverse perspectives to help produce and develop the film music.
