Political Corruption and Economic Development in Jamaica

Abstract

본 연구의 목표는 부정부패가 어떻게 경제 발전에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지 평가하는 것이다. 이를 설명하기 위한 자료로 자메이카, 바베이도스, 그리고 한국의 부패 사례를 통한 2차 자료를 사용하였다. 본 연구는 모든 종류의 부패 정부가 바람직하지 않지만, 특정한 종류의 부패는 다른 분야보다 특히 경제에 심각한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 보여준다. 같은 맥락에서 저자는 부패의 종류와 국가 경쟁력 사이에 어떠한 관계가 형성되어 있을 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구는 자메이카의 잘못된 경제 행위가 지금의 부패 상황에 어떤 영향을 주었는지에 초점을 두고 있다. 연구자는 한국과 바베이도스에서 보여주듯이, 일반적 타입(common types)의 부패가 자메이카와 같은 경우와는 달리 경제발전에 해를 끼치지 않을 수 있다는 점을 주장한다.;The aim of the research was to examine how different types of corruption affect economic development. A case study design was employed that relied on narratives and secondary data on corruption in Jamaica, Barbados and Korea. The study came to note a possibility that although all forms of corruption are not desirable in a country, some forms have more negative effects and far reaching consequences on the economy than others. In the same vein, the study noted a possibility that a relationship may exist between types of corruption prevalent in a country and its national competitiveness. Study highlighted how Jamaica’s poor economic performance was in part attributed to the type of corruption present. The study has shown a possibility that, in Korea and Barbados, common types of corruption were not as detrimental to their economic development as in other countries such as Jamaica.
