Examining all zones of war and occupation, women are suffering marked increase of their rights’ violations. Tens of thousands of refugee women live in miserable conditions, millions are trafficked into prostitution brothels around the world and large numbers of women in such zones are raped by armed forces. The above is only a short list of the inhuman crimes and violations that are committed against women during armed conflicts. Also, this short list represents the outcomes of crucial changes that occur in societies in wartime, but what are the reasons that led to such conditions? Iraqi women’s status after the U.S. led invasion will be the focus of this case study; the main question is what new factors caused the increased suffering of Iraqi women after the U.S. invasion? After the U.S. invasion in 2003, Iraqi women’s status has dramatically decreased, mainly because this war was accompanied with occupation. When U. S. troops occupied Iraqi territories Iraq was devastated socially, politically and economically due to the previous wars’ legacy. Occupation and its consequences enhanced this situation. Usually women are the first to be harmed by any negative change in the communities, under U.S. invasion Iraqi women faced higher challenges. Wars, accompanied with occupation, result in not only infrastructure and law system destruction but also the destruction of the social system represented in family, children, women and men. This research paper will high light the Iraqi case as an example of how war accompanied with occupation can result in women’s status deterioration through analyzing three major factors: Namely occupation forces and armed groups, women’s displacement, killing, abductions and rape, and the fear of losing family members due to the decreased security situation. Violence against women in Iraq is escalating, a wave of intimidation by extremist groups has arisen recently, and violent oppression of women is spreading across the country causing mental and physical destruction of the civil society. The other two main factors although intertwined, government and the society perspectives towards women. Women in Iraq are victims of both their government’s inability to protect them and their retrospective society. The conflict between the two ethnics and different decisions made the government unable to create strategies or plans to protect women. Each political, religious or ethnic group is busy with how to win over the other party or how to gain more power forgetting about women’s suffering in protecting themselves and gaining more rights. Even in the time that the government had the chance to be fair to women, like in writing the new constitution; it caused more discrimination to them. Any society with no unified powerful government will be disabled for government insures unity between its people and establish laws and legislations that protect them. All of the three factors created political, social, cultural, religious and even economical violence against women that are committed by state and non- state actors. I argue that wars that are accompanied with occupation are more sever on women because of the emergence of the above mentioned factors.;전쟁 지역과 점령지들을 살펴 보면, 여성들은 현저하게 그들의 권리를 침해 당하고 있다.
