From Discrimination to Poverty

Abstract

This Thesis aims to discuss and determine the reasons why the indigenous women (Mayas, Xinkas and Garifunas) still face discrimination and are trapped inside the poverty despite the creation of policies, norms, councils and secretariats established by the government and different organizations in a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual country like Guatemala. The root causes of the discrimination and poverty the indigenous women face in every sphere of their life are linked to cultural, economic, political, and social issues that have been changed throughout the history. It is important that the situation of indigenous women comes to light and that their voices are heard and their rights as humans, women and indigenous people are respected. The contribution that indigenous women give to the development of their communities and country has not been fully recognized and valued. It is important to know, understand, and respect indigenous women from their own perspective and cosmovision and thus to recognize the diversity and differences between them. It is time to stop discrimination against the indigenous women so that they can get out of the poverty trap.;이 논문은 과테말라 내 지방의회 및 정부기관 및 해외 여러 기구들의 다민족적, 다문화적, 다중언어적 정책실현과 규범에도 불구하고 차별과 빈곤의 틀에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 과테말라의 토착민여성들 (마야인, 신카인, 가리푸나인)의 실정을 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 이 논문에서 본인은 토착여성 삶의 모든 분야에 걸쳐 있는 차별과 빈곤의 근본적인 원인은 역사가 시작됨과 함께 변화해온 문화, 경제, 정치, 그리고 사회적 문제와 연결되어 있다고 보며 토착민으로서, 여성으로서 또한 인간으로서의 권리 확보를 위해 토착여성의 이런 상황 및 그들의 목소리는 부각되어야 한다. 과테말라 내 토착여성들이 사회와 국가에 공여하는 개발의 기여는 잘 알려지지 않았을뿐더러 저 평가 되어왔다. 이 논문에서 본인은 과테말라 토착여성들의 견해와 세계관을 알고 그들간의 다양성을 이해하고 존중하는 태도가 중요하며, 이런 태도야 말로 토착여성들을 향한 차별을 막고 빈곤의 틀에서 나올 수 있는 중요한 첫걸음임을 제시하려 한다.
