Abstract
People's awareness, values, and lifestyles have been changing with the coming of globalization of the world in the 21st century, and this change is influencing the education of democratic citizens in our society. This study is focused on the multicultural phenomenon that we can think about in the social studies in relation to globalization of the world. As the advent of multiracial and multicultural society caused an increase in families of international marriage and offsprings of migrant workers, studies about the children of multicultural families have increased and the difficulties that the children of migrant workers face have been pointed out as a social problem and caused an increased interest in this area. The objective of this study is to examine the awareness of regular middle school students regarding the children of Asian international marriage families and Kosians, the children of migrant workers, and to provide the basic material for the multicultural education of Korean students. This research examines Korean middle school students' type of experiences regarding Kosians and looks at their openness and stereotypes over a period of time. After selecting one school each from Ansan, a place that represents most foreign migrant workers' residence, and regular area Seoul (according to the possibility of contact regarding Kosians), this study looked at openness and stereotypes towards Kosians, awareness of multicultural society, and the need for multicultural education. The conclusions made based on data analysis of this research are as follows. First, as a result of finding out the openness of regular middle school students based on types of experience regarding Kosians, in groups of direct experience, indirect experience, it was found that the group with direct experience had a more open attitude than the group with indirect experience. For the group with direct experience, higher level of openness was measured as the degree of relationship was closer and the degree of intimacy was higher, and high level of openness was measured when time of contact was more than two years. Second, difference in stereotype was examined according to the type of experience regarding Kosians. Looking at stereotype in total, it was analyzed that there was positive awareness in the order of ones with direct experience and indirect experience, with those with direct experience having the most positive awareness, and in the case of negative awareness adjectives there was no considerable difference depending on types of experience. From the point of positive awareness domain and awareness total point, students with direct experience perceived Kosians positively as the degree of relationship got more intimate, and no considerable difference was detected regarding duration of contact. Third, as a result of surveying the difference in openness toward Kosians between students in Kosian-residing areas and students outside Kosian-residing areas, the latter was shown to be more open in all aspects of openness, including behavioral, cognitive and emotional openness. In the case of stereotypes, students in general areas showed higher levels of positive awareness than students in Kosian-residing areas, but in the matter of negative awareness, students in general areas also tended to think more negatively about Kosians than students in Kosian-residing areas, which led to the conclusion that there was no difference between the two groups in the case of stereotypes. Fourth, looking at the awareness of multi-cultural society and the need for multi-cultural education, analysis showed that in both areas students in Kosian-residing areas had a higher average than students in general areas. Therefore, students in general areas believed more strongly than students in Kosian-residing areas that Korea has become a multi-cultural society, and they were more aware of the need for multi-cultural education. As a result of this research, it can be concluded that students who acquire and maintain a direct relationship with Kosians have a higher degree of open attitude toward Kosians than the group with indirect experience, and this can act as a proof showing that positive awareness of Kosians can refrain people from having a stereotypical attitude. Also, the fact that higher intimacy level and longer period of contact with Kosians showed open and positive attitude, can be interpreted to mean that whether or not a person has experienced Kosians is an important variable. This research was intended as basic data for general students in Korea so they can mix and coexist with Kosians who are new members of the Korean society, with an influx of immigrant workers and increase in international marriage families that are leading Korea into a multi-cultural society. It is anticipated that this research will lay the groundwork for Korean youths to become true democratic citizens who have an open and tolerant attitude towards new members of our society that is growing increasingly multiracial and multi-cultural.
