Abstract
Several major changes are currently expected in the field of English education in Korea. Especially, the communicative purpose of language learning is considered much more crucial today than at any other time, drawing the greatest attention to the importance of listening ability among the four language skills. Students, however, are still learning listening the same way that they did in the past: listening to and answering comprehension questions. There are few education teaching suprasegmentals, such as stress and rhythm, which are fundamental requirements in understanding English. Furthermore, students do not have much opportunity to practice English listening in more effective ways. Therefore, the present study examined the new method of listening, shadowing, and determined whether it is effective and helpful for students. Toward this end, 20 university students were gathered and were made to study English listening 12 times, through the method of shadowing. After a one-month experiment, the method's effects on students' listening abilities, pronunciation and attitudes were tested. The main results are as follows. First, the listening test results show a significant improvement in the students' listening abilities when the shadowing method was implemented. Secondly, in the test on segmentals and suprasegmentals, the experimental group got a much higher score than the control group. This result suggests that students may have developed the rules of English pronunciation themselves by pronouncing the sounds of English words aloud, or, they may have become more familiar with the suprasegmentals, such as rhythm and stress. Third, the pronunciation test scores of the experimental group also rose significantly. This result is surprising in that the students did not learn the pronunciation rules explicitly. This can be attributed to the fact that students noticed the difference between their perceptions of the sounds and the sounds they themselves produced, and that they corrected their pronunciation errors in the process of shadowing. Moreover, the students seemed to have grown accustomed to English rhythm, stress, and linking through constant practice. Lastly, the present study also examined the possible change in the students' attitudes toward English listening and pronunciation after the experiment. The results of the experiment reveal that the students had much interest in English and perceived its importance even before the experiment. Thus, not much difference was shown in the students' attitudes toward English listening before and after the experiment. As regards the students' confidence level and interest in English listening, both groups were found to have obtained greater confidence and to have developed greater interest in English listening after the experiment. The students who belonged to the experimental group provided a number of reasons for their changed attitude. They said that they found the listening file much slower than it was before, which led them to feel comfortable while listening to it. Moreover, they claimed to have realized that English words do not sound exactly the way they look in many cases, and they said that they practiced irregular English sounds much through shadowing. The last four research questions were related to the students' attitudes and confidence level in terms of the pronunciation of English. The results of the experiment show that a meaningful change transpired in the experimental group's attitudes and confidence level. According to the students from this group, they learned that pronunciation can facilitate listening, and that these two are closely correlated. In addition, they claimed that the sounds they were made to pronounce during the experiment seemed more natural than those that they pronounced before the experiment. In spite of the mentioned advantages of shadowing, however, some of the students complained that they found it very hard to follow the listening file at first, and they became exhausted after shadowing in class. Thus, further studies have to be conducted to find better ways of using the benefits of shadowing and of overcoming its disadvantages. The results of the present study suggest the following. First, a more active and synthesized approach is required for the teaching of English, because the process of understanding language via listening is very complex. Furthermore, considering the strong correlation between perception and production of sounds, it is necessary to combine listening with speaking or pronunciation. Second, it is difficult for language learners to exactly perceive a sound in English as there are many English words that are not pronounced as they are spelled. For those who are struggling with sound discrimination, grasping the meaning of a word through the top-down process is not easy as well. Hence, classes where the bottom-up process is used are also essential for EFL/ESL students to develop their English listening skills.
