Abstract
Folk paintings of the late Joseon dynasty functions as an illustration which delivers the true-life dramas and customs of the time period and is a decoration with both practicality and ornamentation as a painting of the people, giving a frank and bold expression of their emotions, hopes, and actual lives. Chaek-geo-ri is like a still-life painting of a pile of books stacked high and other decorations in a library. It is also called as Chaek-ga-do or Moon-bang-do , and is a form that takes an important part in folk paintings. In this study, the possibility of being illustrations of folk paintings was searched for in their illustrative and decorative functions. Especially the formative characteristics of Chaek-geo-ri being expressed in a unique point of view were investigated. After reinterpreting and renewing the results, the paintings were expressed as illustrations with the city image as the motive and a peculiar figurative charm of modern senses. Chaek-geo-ri paintings, which was the trend of paintings in the 18th, 19th centuries of the Joseon dynasty as a form of folk paintings. Being a new form that could not be found in previous traditional paintings, it had a unique, unprecedented formative beauty and interesting factors that attracted one's eyes. The ways of expression, viewpoint, and composition of Chaek-geo-ri are very unusual. New techniques were created to construct its special pattern and characteristics. Materials appearing in the Chaek-geo-ri paintings, its composition features, and color expressions show many factors of modern paintings. The forms of subjects and objects were disorganized and reorganized by using multiple viewpoints and Parallel perspective drawings, which granted exceptional, free expression techniques that could not be seen in previous genres. Chaek-geo-ri paintings originated from the Gimyeongjeoljido of China. At first these paintings were enjoyed in the palace, but it gradually changed into Joseon style. Then it finally spread throughout the common people and changed into various constituent forms. As the times changed, Chaek-geo-ri appeared in forms of a table with shelves and mixed with other folk paintings. The most representative type is the mounting type. The speciality of the representative technique of Chaek-geo-ri paintings can be summarized as parallel perspective, multiple viewpoints, reverse perspective method, simultaneity, frontality, 2-dimensional, symmetrical, and repetitive. Multiple viewpoints, parallel perspective (isometric drawing method), and reverse perspective method mainly shows in the mounting type paintings. Reverse perspective method which is to switch the appreciator and subject within the basic frame of Chaek-geo-ri paintings made up of horizontal and vertical lines, expressions of reorganizing and reinterpreting the subject in a unique form, and ornamentation were displayed. Having multiple viewpoints is a very peculiar technique showing objects appearing without regard for the subject type or season on one picture. Sometimes both sides and the upper side of a single object is expressed at the same time. This point of view creates an ambiguous space between the subject and the observer, inducing the observer to unique visual experiences and interests beyond space and time. The Chaek-geo-ri paintings may seem a bit inarticulate and senseless somehow since they are different from the expressions our eyes are used to. However, they can be more special and modern instead by breaking free from the formalities. It is true the values of these paintings have been undervalued and have not received attention due to its rough, insufficient expression methods and the absence of a clear public opinion and artist. I think the peculiar, unique formative beauty and original expression methods of Chaek-geo-ri paintings have much value to be studied for research on various, individual expressions of illustrations. The peculiar formative features which the Chaek-geo-ri paintings have only are investigated, modern formative beauties are renewed in this study. Based on the results, the modern formative beauty values of Chaek-geo-ri paintings are searched for and traditional techniques are interpreted modernly in order to discover a way to practically create an illustration work piece and expression technique. I hope this study would become an opportunity to renew Chaek-geo-ri paintings, reinterpret the modern, footloose and fancy-free formative beauty seen in them to present a way to apply it on illustrations, and that it would help similar studies enforced in the future.
