조선후기 여성들의 삶과 보자기

Abstract

본 연구는 전통문화를 계승하고 발전시키자는 취지에서 출발했으며, 조선후기 여성들의 생활문화 속에서 사용된 보자기 중 조각보에 대한 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 이 연구를 위해서 조선시대 여성들의 삶과 관련이 있는 각종 규훈서 연구 및 조각보의 실물 고찰을 행했고 전문가와의 면담연구를 병행하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선후기의 여인들에게 침선이라는 것은 여성이라면 누구나 갖추어야 할 주요 덕목이었다. 침선의 첫 단계는 조각천 잇기였으며, 직물이 귀했던 당시 옷을 재단하고 남은 자투리가 그 재료로 활용되었다. 둘째, 조선 후기 사회에서 보자기는 다양한 용도로 사용되었다. 각종 문헌자료와 풍속화를 살펴본 결과, 보자기는 의·식·주 생활에서 상용보로 사용됨은 물론, 예의·상징적인 차원에서도 사용되었던 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 상용보에는 상보·목판보·반짇고리보·머릿보 등이, 비 상용보에는 기러기보·폐백보·함보 등의 혼례용보가 있었다. 셋째, 조각보가 제작된 이유에 대해서는 상용보로의 활용, 제작행위의 즐거움, 기원적 행위라는 측면에서 살필 수 있었다. 궁중에서 제작·사용된 궁보의 크기에 따른 용도 파악을 기초로 민간에서 사용된 조각보의 용도에 대해 고찰한 결과, 조각보를 구성하는 직물 종류에 따라 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마직물 조각보는 세탁이 용이하다는 특성상 주로 상보·빨래보 등으로 사용되었다. 한편 견직물 조각보는 세탁이 어렵기 때문에 옷감이나 패물보 등 더러움을 타지 않는 용도로 사용되었다. 특히 각양각색의 색 조각천을 조화롭게 배치·제작한 견직물 조각보의 경우는 여성들의 혼수품으로 준비된 것이라는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 이들 견직물 조각보는 혼수문화의 산물로, 여성들의 근검·절약정신 및 침선솜씨를 가늠할 수 있는 척도였다. 본고는 조선후기의 조각보가 단순히 그 미적인 관점에서의 연구대상이 아닌, 당 시대 여성들의 삶 속에서 자연스럽게 제작·사용된 의미 있는 일상용품이었다는 측면에 초점을 두고 연구했다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 하겠다.;This research, started for the purpose of succeeding and developing the traditional culture, aims at study of wrapping cloths used by women in the Joseon Dynasty. For this purpose, both literature surveys focused on women's life in Joseon Dynasty and observation of real materials were done. And also interviewing experts on the fabrication of sewing craft-works in the Joseon Dynasty was carried out together. The results show that; First, needlework was an essential virtue for all women in the late Joseon Dynasty. The fundamental step of sewing was putting the remnants of cloths together. In the Joseon Dynasty, cloths were valuable things, so the remnants of cloths were useful materials for the practice of needlework. Second, wrapping cloths were used in various purposes in the late period of Joseon Dynasty. As the result of studying literatures and genre paintings, it is considered that wrapping cloths were used not only as necessities of life but also as expression of salutation or courtesy. In other words, they were used as table covers, wooden platter covers, workbox covers, kerchiefs and so on in daily life, and they were also used on special occasions like wedding ceremony. Third, reasons of making wrapping cloths can be explained as the practicality and the pleasure of fabrication of wrapping cloths and as a method of supplication. By researching common wrapping cloths based on studies of court wrapping cloths, it is found that there were differences in fabrics in respect of the ways of using them. Ramie patchwork wrapping cloths were used as table covers, laundry covers and so on for their easiness of wash. On the other hand, for silk patchwork wrapping cloths, they are hard to wash. So they were mainly used as cloth covers and accessory covers. Especially, silk patchwork wrapping cloths with harmonic arrangement of colorful remnants were used as dowry. These, as products of wedding culture, showed a bride's diligence, frugality and skill of needlework. This paper has importance in researching patchwork wrapping cloths by treating them as daily-life necessities of women, not just as aesthetic materials.
