Abstract
This study aims at improving language skills with the application of an English program with drama activities in an elementary school. Based on the national curriculum of English in the elementary school, the goal of the subject is to have students' interest, self-confidence, and communication skills in learning English. Since the content of the English textbook is so limited, teachers often let students repeat the structures in the class so students are easily bored in learning English. So, it is necessary to try other activities, for example, using drama that can be applied to various situations. As a result, with drama activities that provide many topics in the natural conversation, students can have more chance to learn English expressions in the various situations. The program was based on the model of Grave(1996)'s course design. The first step was 'needs assessment' which showed what the students' needs were, and the second step was determining goals and objectives which could expect the result. The third was conceptualizing content which contained what necessarily should be taught. The fourth step was selecting and developing materials and activities which showed what and how to teach. The fifth step was organization of content and activities which showed what the program would be. The sixth one was about how to evaluate students' achievement and its program. The final was consideration of resources and constraints which showed the class circumstance. The drama activities used in this program were various, such as warm-up, drama game, role play, improvisation, skit, and jazz chant. Each unit consisted of 4 lessons in the English classroom: students practiced the expressions in a unit which included warm-ups and drama games during the first and the second lessons, and did role plays or improvisation during the third lesson, and tried skits or jazz chants during the last lesson. The program was applied to 30 students of the 6th grade for 20 lessons in P elementary school, located in Yangchun-gu, Seoul. For the evaluation of the program, students took verbal and paper tests which had been taken before and after the program. The result of the tests was analyzed with t-verification using the SPSS/WIN 10.0 statistics program. The satisfaction and participation of the English class was proved through surveys which had been taken before and after the program. The satisfaction of this program was proved by students' self-evaluation, as well. The results showed that the program with drama activities was proved to improve the language skills after carrying out this program. It was because the later mean of the verbal test was higher than the former test and the average of the paper test was also higher than the former test. So the result showed an improvement with statistically meaningful difference in the .05 level. And, the results of the survey and the self-evaluation showed the students' preference of the drama activities and the increase of students' satisfaction and participation. Therefore, the English program using drama activities was effective in increasing language skills. However, there are limitations in generalizing the effects as the above result because this program was carried out with only 30 students of the 6th grade in one class. So, it is necessary that another study should be carry out to prove these effects. In addition, it is also necessary that this program should be applied to the other grade students to see the results.
