dc.description.abstractThe design of pillow especially that of Chosun age was observed and the materials and the patterns were studied through present data. The main idea of Cho Sun people in deciding the form of the pillows was based on the morals and the academic life of scholars of that age. Therefore the scholar's life differenting the room for women from the one for men seemed to have effect on the modeling of pollows. The form which had few decoration and effective function was resulted from the beauty sense based on the Conficianism. The Korean pillows were made of various Kinds of materials such as tree, bamboo, lacquered ware etc. The mainly used trees were a persimmon tree, a pine tree, a ginko tree and pauloconia etc. The fundamental beauty of the structure of Korean pillows could be seen in the fact that the beauty of nature was exhibited by making the best use of the grain of wood. The philosophy of naturialism was infiltrated in the patterns of pillows in view of the fact that the objects of patterns were come from the most non artificial ways. The main ideas of this thesis were writtern as follows. 1. The emphasis was laid on the inner part rather than outer part and the line was simple and rigid. 2. The line was sharp and the form was solid. Probably solidity was considered more importent than modeling. The statistics showed that the rectangular type the line of which was solid was the most popular. 3. The Korean pillow had a strong relation to the folkcraft. The art of that age was the life it self as well as the belief.;本 硏究는 韓國 枕類를 調査 分析하고 그 性格을 把握함으로써, 우리의 傳統的인 美를 찾고자 朝鮮時代의 退枕에 대한 全般的인 考察을 試圖한 것이다. 그 方法으로 現存 遺物과 文獻을 통한 調査로서 圖錄을 作成하여 統計를 내었고, 이것을 綜合 分析하여 다음과 같은 要約을 할 수 있었다. 첫째, 朝鮮時代 退枕은 造形的인 면에서 素材의 自然美를 최대한으로 살리고 있다. 즉 全體的인 造形의 간결한 線과, 面, 대담한 單純性, 木材自體가 갖는 自然的인 木理를 하나의 統一된 美로 만들어낸 점이다. 이런 目的을 위해 먹감나무나 梧桐, 槐木등 木理가 뚜렷하고 아름다운 것을 使用하였으며 自然스러운 木理를 變化있게 배치하여 全體의 造形的인 美까지 생각하였다. 둘째, 退枕의 形態에 있어서는, 線이 銳利하며, 장식적인 면보다 내구성과 실용성을 重要視하였다. 우리나라는 半島라는 地理的 條件으로 항시 外部의 侵略이 그칠 사이가 없었고 이러한 狀態에 놓인 韓國 사람들은 强한 意志와 氣力을 갖지 않고서는 살아갈 수 없었다. 이것은 時間이 흐름에 따라 强한 民族性을 이루게 하였고, 견고성이 더욱 重要視되어 졌다고 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 朝鮮時代의 退枕은 民族的인 表現愛가 짙게 깃들여져 있어, 民藝的이라 할 수 있다. 民藝는 民衆的인 藝術을 일컫는 것으로 이 時代의 美術은 그들의 生活이며 信仰이기도 하다. 이것은 감상만을 위한 美術이 아니며 새로운 韓國的인 性格이 두드러지게 나타난, 순수한 美意識과 洗鍊美가 극치를 보여주고 있다.-
