관사 용법에 관한 연구

Abstract

영어를 모국어로 하는 원어인(native speaker)들과 언어 습관이 다른 우리 나라 학생들은 관사(the Article)를 올바르게 사용하는 데 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 우리나라 학생들이 당면하고 있는 관사 사용법의 문제점을 알아내고 학생들에게 관사 용법에 대한 실력을 다소나마 향상시킬 수 있는 일선 교사들의 효과적인 교수법을 찾는데 도움이 되게 하기 위한 것이 본 연구의 목적으로 하였으며 다음과 같은 방법으로 연구하였다. 본 논문은 중학교 영어 교과서에 나타난 용법들을 분류, 조사한 결과 정관사의 용법은 17종류, 부정 관사의 용법은 12종류, 관사를 사용하지 않는 경우는 31종류, 모두 60종류로 분류하였다. 각 용법에 해당되는 예문은 중학교 교과 과정에서 선택하였으며 그중 평이하고 널리 알려진 문장을 각 용법에서 간추려 문제지를 작성하였다. 서울 시내의 N 중학교와 S 중학교 3학년 학생들을 대상으로 각 학교에서 한 학급씩 테스트를 실시하여 관사용법의 난이도를 측정하였다. 본 연구의 Ⅱ장에서는 관사의 사용 원리를 설명 하였으며 Ⅲ장에서 중학교 영어 교과서의 관사 용례를 조사 하였다. 관사의 사용 원리는 영어를 모국어로 하는 사람들이 습관에 의해서 모든 명사를 구분될 것(differentiated)과 구분 불가능(undifferentiated)의 2가지 부류로 나누고 있다고 보는 것이다. 즉 어떤 명사가 사용될 때 구분이 되어 있지 않다고 생각되면 관사를 사용하지 않고 반대로 명사가 한 개체로서 그 종류 중의 하나 하나로 구분 되었을때는 "a"나 "the"를 그 명사 앞에 사용한다. 구분이 되기 위해서는 개개의 단위체 처럼 어떤 종류 중의 하나의 구성원 이거나 일정한 크기, 모습, 한계가 있고 시간, 공간 중의 일지점을 나타내는 개념의 한 표본(exemplification)이어야 한다는 것이다. 어떤 대상에 관한 사실을 가리키는 것 이라면 "a"를 사용하고, 말하는 사람과 듣는 사람이 다 같이 알고 있는 "상호간의 경험"을 표시하는 것 이라면 "the"를 보통 쓴다. 명사가 구분 되어야 할 것과 구분 되지 않아야 할 것인가의 결정은 말하는 사람 자신이 그 명사가 가리키고 있는 물건을 어떻게 볼것인가에 따라 구분될수 있다는 것을 몇 개의 예를 들어 설명하였다.;The question of article usage in English is a source of considerable concern, and often of frustration to many students and teachers of English as a foreign language in Korea. The main object of this paper is to analyze the problem of article usage and offer some suggestions for its solution. It is hoped that this can be used as a basis for the preparation of teaching materials or for the teaching and learning of English in middle schools. The writer thinks that we have studied the use of English by memorizing certain rules. That is, we use "a(n)" or "the" before a certain kind of noun and use no article before a certain kind of noun. But, we have examined the particular kinds of contexts and ways of looking at the things that underlie the use of the various article in English. The native speaker of English unconsciously divides all nouns, according to his use of them, into two categories: Undifferentiated and differentiated. We have seen that the defines, designates, points out which or what the speaker is referring to; and it also includes expected recognition by the hearer. In choosing whether or not to use an article, the korean student should bear in mind that ultimately it makes little difference whether the word as generally used names an abstraction, a substance, or a discrete entity. We must learn to decide along lines used by the native speaker. We come to the conclusion we can't say "never" or "always" about the use of this article or that with a given noun. We have seen how many mass nouns or abstract nouns can be used as countable nouns. And we have also seen that even proper nouns can take the article. It would not be going too far to say that any English noun can be used with zero-form, a(n)-form, or the-form depending on the situation. Through the study of the article we could easily understand that articles are essentially indicators of the mood and attitude of the speaker and creators of attitude in the hearer.
