Abstract
The present study attempts to examine some of the previous findings and viewpoints on partially sighted children with relation to intelligence, personal adjustment, and visual perception through experiment, thus finally presenting educational implications and suggestions for them. In addition, clinical data were analysed for the classification of the causes of the partially sightedness. In order to examine whether the partially sighted have any defect in intelligence and personality. Forty five out-patients attending elementary school in grades three to six served as experimental groups and for control group one hundred seventy one students used. Next, twenty out-patients attending elementary school in first grade sampled as experimental group and eighty children compared of twenty first grade children, twenty mentally defected children, and 40 kindergarten children served as controlled group with the purpose of comparing them in terms of visual perception. Clinical records of one hundred and fifty two out-patients was classified according to the causes of partially sightedness. The results and interpretation are described as following, comparing them with the previous studies by others. The results shows that there is no significant difference in intelligence between experimental and control groups. And this result supports Ashcroft'(1963) view points. In personality dimension, the partially sighted did not show any deviated personal tendencies. This is not in accordance with other studies by Garrison and Force(1965). In visual perception test, the partially sighted group presented much poor performance than the control group in accordance with Kaitos'(1963) studies. The analysis of clinical data showed that above eighty percent of the patients are classified to prenatal causee, as Kerby'(1958) research has pointed out. From the above findings, followings are implied and suggested with relation to the education for the partially sighted. First, the partially sighted children are not different from normal children in intelligence and personality, while showing poor visual perception. Accordingly, it is desired to prepare special classed in regular elementary school for them. Second, it is proposed to prepare classification standards for exceptional children legalized by the authority concerned. Third, doctors, teachers, and partially sighted children's parents must cooperate to help for the effective education of them.
