타이포그래피에 의한 북카바디자인에 관한 연구

Abstract

연구자는 본 논문에서 타이포그래피에 의한 북카바 디자인(Book Cover Design)을 다루었다. 연구의 목적은 인쇄와 직결되는 타이포그래피의 현대적 개념과 그의 활용 가능성을 현대 출판물의 주류를 이루는 서적을 통해 표현하는데 있다. 이 연구를 진행함에 있어서 현재 우리나라 사진식자기에서 사용되어지고 있는 한글·한자의 타이포그래피를 선택하여 이를 조형적 요소로서 Book Cover Design에 관한 20개의 작품을 제작하였다. 제작에 있어서 표현방법은 옵셋인쇄효과를 내기 위하여 교정쇄를 사용했다. 이 논문의 본론은 타이포그래피와 Book Cover Design의 연구와 이를 배경으로한 작품제작으로 이루어져 있다. 타이포그래피는 활자라는 정통적 개념의 Hot Type과 바우하우스 이후 새로운 관점의 타이포그래피의 연구와 실제 활동으로 이루어진 Cold Type으로 분류할수 있는데 현대의 많은 미디어는 후자의 개념을 적용시키고 있으며 이의 계속적인 연구의 중요성은 외국의 사례를 통해 뒷받침되었다. 우리나라의 타이포그래피의 현황에 대해서 살펴 본 결과 활자와 사진식자, 필림셋팅(Film Setting)등의 타입이 있으며 정책적인 배려와 사회제도적인 보호가 한글 타이포그래피발전에 절대적으로 요구되고 있는 현실이다. 본 논문에서는 현실적으로 손쉽게 작업 가능한 사진식자 Type을 활용하여 Book Cover Design에 도입하였는데 이를 위한 기본연구로서 Book Cover Design의 의의를 북 디자인 ( Book Design )과 에디토리얼 디자인의 관계에서 살펴 보았다. 역사적으로 볼 때 얼마전까지만 해도 Book Cover Design이란 책의 보존을 위한 Book Binding에 머물러 있었다. 그러나 커뮤니케이션 이론 및 시각전달이론의 발달과 함께 북 디자인의 이론이 확립되었고 이에 따른 실천작업이 출판물 제작에 있어 보편화되고 있는 추세에 따라 Book Cover Design 작업은 당연히 독립적으로 중요성을 띄게 되었으며 책의 내용과 내용을 구성하고 있는 짜임새와의 통일된 시각으로 파악되어야 한다고 보았다. 이를 위한 제 요소들을 살펴보았으며 작품제작을 위한 이론적 근거로서 제시하였다. 다음에 이와같은 이론을 바탕으로 하여 작품을 전개시켰으며 이 작품을 제작하기 위해서는 책의 제목을 선정하고, 그 내용의 파악, 내용의 성격적 분류, Lay-Out의 설정, 알맞는 사진식자의 선정 및 성격파악, 원고제작, Positive·Negative 밀착, 칼라선정, 인쇄원고 완료, 인쇄소 송고 등 일련의 과정을 거쳤다. 표현 방법으로는 그리드(Grids)의 제시, 크기의 대비, 수직·수평의 구도, 색채에 의한 강조, 기하학적 패턴 등의 여러 조형요소를 도입하였다. 또한 앞으로는 한글 타이포그래피가 조형적 특성을 따라 연구 발전되어야 하며 그라픽 디자이너에 의한 타이포그래피의 활용이 확대되고 또한 실무 디자이너의 작업능률을 올리기 위하여 기계화의 발전과 도입이 적극적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.;This was a research on the Book Cover Design by typography. The purpose of the study was to present modern concept of typography directly related to the printing and to show the possibility of its practical application, through the books which are the main current of modern publication. In progressing the study, we chose the Korean-Chinese Typography used in photocompose machine in Korea today and made twenty works on Book Cover Design using its plastic elements. Revised printing machine as a method of expression in making works was used for the effect of offset-printing. The main part of this research consists of the study on the typography and the Book Cover Design, and pieces of works based on it. Typography is classified into Hot type which is traditional concept and Cold type which contains the study of the typography as a new point of view and its practical application since Bauhaus. The concept of the latter was applied to a lot of modern media, and the importance of its continuous study was supported by many foreign cases. As a result of studying the present state in Korean typography. We found that there were several types such as type, photocompose and film setting, and that the political concern and the socially systematic protection were necessary for the development of Korean typography. We introduced photocompose as easily, realitically workable to Book Cover Design. As the basic study of this introduction, We examined the significance of Book Cover Design between Book Design and Editorial Design. Recently, Book Cover Design has used to book binding for preserving books. With the theory of the communication and the visual communication, the theory of book design was established. And the tendency of its practical work was universally appeared in making publication. As a result of this tendency, book cover design naturally became important in itself. And it should contain unity of the book contents and its structure. So several factors for the practical work were examined in this research and we presented as theoretical bases for making practical works. And then we displayed works based on these theory. We followed the series of process in making these works: selecting the book title, grasping the book contents, classifying the contents according to characteristics, deciding lay-out, selecting the appropriate photocompose, grasping its characteristics, drafting, taking a picture of draft, selecting the color, completing the printing draft, and sending to printery. As the method of its expression, we introduced several plastic elements such as presentation of Grids, size contrast, vertical-horizontal composition, emphasis by color, geometric pattern. Korean typography, from now on, should be studied and developed according to its plastic characteristics. And the practical use of typography by graphic designer should be enlarged, and the development and the introduction of type machinery should positively be made for work efficiency of designer's.
