INNER CONFLICT IN EUGENE O'NEILL'S PLAYS

Abstract

In this thesis, I have studied the inner conflict of man found in Eugene O'Neill's outstanding expressionistic plays, The Emperor Jones (1920), The Hairy Ape (1922), and The Great God Brown (1926). Man is destined to defeat by his pursuit of the unattainable, but the struggle to accomplish the unattainable makes man's life significant and worth living. O'Neill's tragedies have this tragic figure: one who faces inevitable defeat but who isn't a failure, but rather a winner by his endeavour to pursue the unattainable. Adding to this, his inevitable defeat is not an end of all things, but a beginning of a new life when we consider life as a successive process of birth and death. Brutus Jones in The Emperor Jones discovers his naked real self after suffering inner conflict between conscious self and unconscious self, and finally dies. Through death, he seems to begin a new life, accepting his real self. Yank in The Hairy Ape also undergoes inner conflict in the process of the spiritual struggle to belong. Though he fails in the long struggle to belong in reality, and after all comes to face death, he seems to achieve his desire to belong and find a new life in which peace of mind exists through physical death. The Great God Brown depicts the inner conflict of dual personality. Dion Anthony and William Brown experience inner conflict created from their divided personalities. Later, at the moment of death, Brown, the other part of Dion, is spiritually reborn as "Dion Brown," an integrated personality through death. As we have seen above, we can reach the conclusion that O'Neill's heroes enlarge their deeper spiritual understanding of life through inner conflict, and lead an eternal peaceful life through their physical death.;본 논문에서는 Eugene O'Neill의 대표적인 표현주의 작품인 The Emperor Jones(1920), The Hairy Ape(1922) 그리고 The Great God Brown(1926)에 나타난 인간의 내적 갈등의 문제를 분석해 보았다. 인간은 도달하기 어려운 높은 이상과 꿈을 추구하는 까닭에 결국 패배할 수밖에 없는 운명을 타고난 존재이지만 그러한 성취하기 어려운 꿈을 이루기 위해 끊임없이 노력하며 삶과의 투쟁을 벌이는 가운데 진정한 자신의 모습을 발견하고 나아가 인생의 의미를 깊이 깨달아가는 존재이기도 하다. 바로 이러한 투쟁과 노력으로 인간의 삶은 가치있고 의미있는 삶이 된다. O'Neill은 그의 비극에서 이런 비극적인 인간의 모습을 묘사하고 있다. 즉 그들은 이루기 어려운 꿈의 성취를 위해 필연적으로 패배할 수밖에 없는 삶과의 투쟁을 벌인다. 그러나 그러한 비극적인 투쟁과 노력의 결과, 그들의 삶은 의미있고 가치있게 된다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때 그들은 결코 인생의 패배자가 아니라 승리자로 파악될 수 있다. 또한 인간의 삶을 탄생과 죽음의 연속된 과정으로 이해한다면 이들이 불가피하게 맞게 되는 패배나 죽음은 결코 모든 것의 종말이 아니라 새로운 영원한 삶의 시작인 것이다. The Emperor Jones의 주인공 Brutus Jones는 내적 갈등을 겪은 후 자신의 진정한 모습을 발견하고 죽는다. 그러나 그에게 있어 죽음은 삶의 끝이 아니라 진정한 자기 자신의 모습을 받아들일 수 있는 새로운 삶의 시작이라는 의미를 지닌다. The Hairy Ape의 주인공 Yank도 또한 소속되기 위한 정신적 투쟁의 과정에서 내적 갈등을 경험하고 결국 죽음에 이르지만 그러한 육체적 죽음을 통해 그는 소속되고자 하는 그의 열망을 성취하고, 더불어 마음의 평화가 존재하는 새로운 삶을 이룩한다. The Great God Brown은 이중인격의 내적 갈등을 묘사한 작품으로 주인공 Dion Anthony와 William Brown은 모두 분열된 인격에서 비롯되는 내적 갈등을 느낀다. 후에, 제2의 Dion으로 여겨지는 Brown은 죽음에 직면해서 이전의 분열된 인격으로 고통 받던 자아에서 벗어나 "Dion Brown"이라는 통합된 인격체로 재생한다. 지금까지 살펴보았듯이 O'Neill의 주인공들은 내적 갈등을 통해 인간의 삶에 대한 깊은 이해를 넓혀가고 있으며 육체적 죽음을 통해 영원하고 평화로운 새로운 삶을 누리게 됨을 알 수 있다.
