Abstract
This thesis is a study of Jules Perrot. He was a sole male dancer, original choreographer, and able producer of the Romantic ballet. To my regret, his life, activities as a dancer, choreographies, and productions, and the significance and importance of these events have not yet been thoroughly investigated and studied. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to reexamine his bright artistic activities which have not yet been fully appreciated and reached their greatest significance in 20th century ballet. In order to achieve this goal, I have divided the thesis into two main parts. In the first part, I have examined the genesis and definition of Romanticism which had great influence on artistic creativities in 19th century Europe. I have pointed out some characteristics of the Romantic ballet that resulted in coming into existence because Romantic brought about a radical change of themes and techniques of ballet. In addtion, I have mentioned three famous persons, Charles Mazurier, Auguste Vestris, and Victor Hugo who influenced Perrot to become an excellant dancer, choreo-grapher and producer. In the second part, I have described Perrot's life, his wonderful success as a male dancer in the time when female dancer were perfected, and artistic performance in several theatres in Europe. The choreographic background of Giselle, Esmeralda, and Pas de Quatre, their stories and successful premieres have been represented. Perrot, who strongly believed in democracy and worked as a choreographer in Her Majesty's Theatre in London, transformed a dance from the pleasant and fantastic divertissement to the action dance which could communicate the essential thoughts and feelings of human existence to the audience. In order to create the action dance, he did not only utilize the ballet d'action skillfully but also invented eight principles of choreography.(These eight principles have not been generally recognized but arbitrarily classified by me.) When he realized that London people were tired of the action dance, he want to St. Petersburg and through the action dance he revived the stagnant Russian ballet to a height of popularity. This newly revitalized Russian ballet eventually evolved the 20th century classic one. He played a crucial role not only in bridging the Romantic ballet to the classic, but also in breeding Marius Petipa, a father of the classic ballet as a dancer and choreographer. As mentioned above, Perrot's way of dancing, choreographing, and producing a ballet is very significant and important to us. Therefore, I have tried especially to emphasize the fact that our way of understanding and appreciating a ballet better and more deeply is in studying Perrot more.
