Wood has been used in almost every aspect of human endeavor comprising no only our daily life but also creative artistic fields. To the potter it provides ashes that are essential in making various ash glazes. Natural ash glaze was found accidentally in ancient China while firing the wood kiln. Later it became common to use ash glazes around the world, especially in Korea and Japan. In this study I tried to make vsrious ash glazes using pine, chestnut and eulalia which can be obtained easily. In making flowing design I used ordinary silicate material following the Seger formula and added various colouring agents Studying the difference of melting state according to temperature change, method of colouring on celadon porcelain and white porcelain and the change of colour according to the firing atmosphere, I tried to test the artistic utilities of the various colours and surface qualities. What follows are the results of my study: 1. As eulalia ash contained much SiO_(2) and the chestnut ash conta ined many alka1ine earths which accelerate the vitreous state, various kinds of glazes such as mat, semi-mat, iridescent transparent, opaque, and flowing glaze could be easily obtained according to the composition rate. 2. Containing just a small amount of Fe, eulalia ash shined brightly. However, containing 2-4% Fe and a lot of impure materials, the chestnut ash and pine ash showed brown colour. 3. Being very sensitive to the change of temperature, the ash glaze showed a darter colour on the celadon porcelain than on the white porcelain and showed a blue tint by reduction-firing. 4. On the experiment of colouring agents, CoO proved to be very effective in colouring and showed a similiar dark colour as temmoku glaze. In general, the colour by CoO felt calm and moderate. 5. To get the flowing designs of ash glazes, a lot of CaO which made the melting temperature lower was needed as the following figures of Seger formula indicate: ◁수식 삽입▷(원문을 참조하세요) 6. At 1280℃ a flowing design ash glazes on ordinary sili cate material produced marble patterns. When colouring agents were added, those glazes showed a clear colour change and some white spotted crystals. 7. The ash glazes applied to my works, gave a calm, moderate, and intimate feeling, which, I think, could be effectively utilized in modern pottery.-
