Attribution refers to inferring the cause of a person's behavior. In the attributional process, people are assumed to employ several types of causal schema. One of them is multiple sufficient causal schema. This schema is a conceptual organization in which a person perceives that several possible causes can sufficiently bring about a particular behavior. When trying to find a certain cause of behavior, people use the discounting principle. The discounting principle is to infer, when there are two plausible causes of behavior, the cause of behavior by weakening the effect of one of two causes while accepting the other. When people do this, they are said to show the discounting effect. The previous experiments (Karniol & Ross, 1976; Smith, 1975) on the children's use of the discounting principle in the causal attribution showed that a majority of preschool children did not make use of the discounting principle. Kim and Kim(1981) suggested that the reason for this lack of use of the discounting principle was that preschool children judged as a good child the one who obeyed directions of mother or adults. On the other hand, Kim (in press) obtained evidence suggesting that preschool children did not systematically use the discounting principle partly because they interpretated as more interesting the behavior following mother's instruction than the behavior initiated by an actor himself. In order to resolve these two possible explanations (the good-child judgment explanation and the inequality of behavioral effects explanation) of preschool children's problem with use of the discounting principle, the direction and cue variables were manipulated in the present study. Eighty preschool childrens participated in this experiment. They were assigned by a blocked randomization method to four experimental conditions: direction-cue, direction-no cue, no direction-cue, and no direction-no cue. Children were told six pairs hypothetical stories in which an actor behaves in a certain way on his own decision or by the order of his mother. Before the stimulus stories, the subject children in the direction condition were told four stories which described that a child doing a certain thing for himself was a good child. The subjects in the cue condition were given the original stories with the following emphasis: "The actor who did such behavior on his own decision enjoyed (something) very much." The result of this study showed a significant main effect of the cue variable. Preschool children in the cue condition revealed more discounting effects than those in the no cue condition. This result is consistent with that reported by Kim(1982). On the other hand, the direction variable didn't show any significant effects. There was, however a significant interaction between the direction and experimenter variables. Further study is needed to clarify the nature of this interaction. An analysis was also conducted on the subjects' free responses to questions asking about the possible causes of each actor. The pattern of results does indicate that although some of the preschool children did not systematically use the discounting principle, they seem to have correctly understood an internal or external cause of an actor.;사람들이 歸因過程( attribution processes ) 즉 自己 또는 他人의 行動의 原因을 推定하는 過程에서, 多充分 因果세마( multiple sufficient causal schema )를 사용 할 경우 節滅原理( discounting principle )를 적용하게 된다.
