F. Scott Fitzgerald의 부에 관한 연구

Abstract

The Great Gatsby는 1925년 출판된 이래로 비평가들로부터 많은 비판과 찬사를 함께 받은 작품이다. 이 작품의 필자인 F. Scott Fitzgerald는 1920년대 전후세대인 The Lost Generation과 The Jazz Age 를 대변하는 작가로서 당시의 시대상황을 잘 드러내고 있다. 1920년대는 제1차 세계대전후라는 시대적인 배경이 보여주는 특이한 상황 때문에 정신적인 만족보다는 물질적인 풍요와 부의 추구를 찾던때였다. 이와 같은 시대적인 배경이 그의 작품에 영향을 많이 주고 있다. Fitzgerald는 다른 작가들 보다도 유난히 작품속에서 부에 관련된 주제를 많이 다루고 있는데 부와 사랑, 부와 지위상승, 부와 좌절 등 다양한 모습이다. 그의 이러한 작품경향은 작가자신의 생애가 부와 많이 관련되어 있어서 그의 경험이 작품속에 그대로 반영된 것이라 볼 수 있다. 특히 The Great Gatsby에서는 이와 같은 경향이 두드러지는데 작품 속의 등장인물들은 작가자신의 주변 인물들의 분신이라고 하겠다. 주인공인 Jay Gatsby는 가난하다는 이유로 연인으로부터 거절당했으므로 이에 대한 보상을 받으려고 많은 부의 축적을 이루어 옛 연인을 다시 찾으려고 한다. Gatsby의 이러한 모습은 Fitzgerald 자신의 경험의 산물이라 하겠으며 Daisy Buchanan의 부주의하며 사치와 허영 그리고 부에 물들어 있는 모습은 Fitzgerald의 부인인 Zelda의 모습과 일치한다고 보겠다. 그리고 George Wilson의 무기력과 나태는 Fitzgerald의 아버지 Edward의 경제적인 무능력이 모델이 되었다고 볼 수 있으며 Myrtle Wilson의 하류계급에 대한 불만과 상류층으로 부상하고 싶은 열망은 Fitzgerald의 어머니 Mollie가 그의 아들을 통해서 이루고 싶어하는 모습과 일맥상통한다고 볼 수 있다. 또한, Daisy의 남편인 Tom Buchanan의 모습은 Fitzgerald의 우상이었던 Tommy Hitchcock의 모습과도 통한다고 보겠다. 이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 The Great Gatsby속의 인물들은 작가 자신의 주변인들의 분신이라고 하겠다. 또한 이들 인물들은 당시의 시대상에 따른 부에 대한 환상과 좌절 등 여러가지 다양한 부와 관련된 주제를 대변한다.;The Great Gatsby written by F. Fitzgerald's work was wealth-oriented : wealth and love, wealth and social hierarchy, and wealth and frustration. The tendency of the works can relate to the author's life, and especially the characters of The Great Gatsby may be by Fitzgerald's circumferential people. So the aim of this study is focused on Fitzgerald's view of wealth The Great Gatsby. First of all, Jay Gatsby was jilted from his lover because of poverty so he wanted to compensate by accumulating much money. It follows from this that Gatsby is the model of Fitzgerald himself. The same is true of Daisy Buchanan, who is Zelda, Fitzgerald's wife. It is fully assumed that George Wilson can be replaced by Fitzgerald's father. And Myrtle Wilson is unsatisfied with her status of the lower class so she wants to belong to high society. Her aspiration of the high class is similar to that of Millie, Fitzgerald's mother. The drifting polo player Tom Buchanan is like the famous polo star, Tommy Hitchcock, who was actually Fitzgerald's idol. The characters mentioned above are all invariably related to the real peoplewhom Fitzgerald himself had a close relationship in his life.
