Abstract

King Lear has generally been received as one of Shakespeare's greatest plays for many reasons. It embodies the most comprehensive vision of human life to its fullest extent. King Lear's poetic intensity conveys to our imagination an elemental human world in all its depth. One of the important themes in King Lear is the meaning of Lear's suffering and regeneration between the conflict of malignant nature and benignant nature. This conflict is caused by a fundamental difference in the way the protagonist understands Nature. This fundamental conflict is perhaps most clearly reflected in Edmund and Cordelia. Edmund's Nature is absolutely materialistic, physical and free from custom. He is a Machiavellian who will do everything for his own interests. On the other hand, Cordelia denies Edmund's Nature. To Cordelia, Nature is the fundamental principle and law which leads to truth and love. For truth, she forsakes her portion of the fortune which Lear is to give her, and for Love she risks her Life. These two Natures must inevitably conflict as seen not only in Cordelia and Edmund but in the other major characters as well. While the evil characters are Goneril, Regan, and Edmund, the good ones are Cordelia, Lear, Gloucester, and Edgar. Lear and Gloucester suffer within and without between the two Natures and travel through suffering from a superficial materialistic understanding of Nature to a deep insight of it. In King Lear Shakespeare universalizes ingratitude and intensifies the effect of tragic meaning, using the double plot. As Lear and Gloucester have tragic flaws, they walk head on into disaster. Lear is blind to the spiritual quality which Cordelia's words convey and Gloucester is blind to truth as Lear is. The fact that both Lear and Gloucester disclaim their fatherhood by spoken words or a fabricated letter without deeper communication means that they have lived on a superficial level, lacking the spirit to see the truth. But Lear and Gloucester are more or less transformed to see even dimly the value of wisdom and truth through suffering from the resultant pain caused by the struggle between two rival forces of Nature. As it were, Lear has the insight to see truth through madness, and Gloucester too through physical blindness. They are regenerated by the love of children whom they discarded. Perhaps Shakespeare is in earnest to suggest a vision of human wisdom and truth that all men should strive to attain, universally and eternally.;King Lear는 일반적으로 셰익스피어의 가장 위대한 作品으로 여겨지고 있다. 이는 인간 존재에 대한 이해를 가장 함축적으로 표현했기 때문이다. 또한 King Lear의 詩的인 효과는 근본적인 인간 세계에 대한 우리의 상상력을 강도 있게 전달해 주고 있다. Edmund의 Nature는 절대적으로 物質的이며 형이하학적이고 관습에 구애받기를 거부한다. 그는 자신의 이익을 위해서라면 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 전형적인 Machiavellian인 것이다. 한편, Cordelia는 Edmund의 자연관을 부정한다. Cordelia에게 있어서 Nature란 사랑과 진실로 통하는 근원적인 원리와 법칙이다. 진실을 위해 자기에게 주어진 재산을 포기했으며, 사랑을 위해 자신의 목숨까지도 무릅쓰는 것이다. 이 두 자연관은 Cordelia와 Edmund에서 뿐만 아니라 다른 인물들에서도 불가피하게 대립하게 되는데 악의 세력에 속하는 인물들이 Goneril, Regan, Edmund이고, Cordelia, Lear, Gloucester, Edgar가 선한 인물을 대표하고 있다. Lear와 Gloucester는 이러한 두 자연관의 대립 속에서 고통 받게 되고 Nature에 대한 피상적인 이해에서부터 깊은 통찰력을 가지게 될 때까지 방황하게 된다. 여기서 셰익스피어는 겹줄거리를 사용함으로써 背恩忘德을 보편화시키고 이 작품의 비극적 의미의 효과를 강화시키고 있는 것이다. Lear나 Gloucester 모두 비극적 결점을 가지고 있는 데 Lear는 자신의 성급하고 이기적인 성격 때문에 진실을 바로 보지 못하고 Gloucester 또한 쾌락적이고 경솔한 성격으로 자신을 고통 속으로 몰아넣게 된다. 그들이 말과 편지 때문에 재고의 여지도 없이 혈연관계를 끊는다는 것은 이러한 그들의 성격을 단적으로 나타내고 있는 것이다. 그러나 Lear와 Gloucester는 각각 madness와 육체적인 blindness라는 고통를 통해 점차적으로 진실과 지혜의 가치를 알게 되는 것이다. 즉 고통을 통해 정신적으로 새로 태어나게 되는데, 결정적으로 자신들이 버렸던 자식들에 의해 구원받게 된다. 이렇듯 King Lear는 모든 인간이 가혹한 고통을 겪고 난 이후 자기 성숙을 향한 내면적인 새로운 세계를 성취해야만 함을 우리에게 보여주고 있는 것이다. 여기에서의 고통이란 그것이 인간 자체의 질을 지향하고 있기 때문에 더욱 값진 것이다.
