新小說에 투영된 基督敎 倫理意識의 고찰

Abstract

일반적으로 開化期文學의 발생적 측면에서 볼 때, 이 시기의 문학이 開化思想을 배경하여 산출된 일종의 특수문학적 성격을 띤다는 것으로, 다라서 이들의 궁극적인 가치는 그 예술성과 함께 시대적 사명을 다함에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 이 시대문학을 검토함에 있어 그 문학적 성과를 論議하기에 앞서, 먼저 개화기의 특수한 시대상황과의 相應을 통한 歷史主義 또는 社會倫理主義的 측면으로 조명하는 것이 무엇보다 중요한 일이라 여겨진다. 이러한 관점에서 本 稿는 이 시기 발생했던 新小說이 그 精神史的 局面으로서 外來 基督敎와의 관계에서 볼 때, 基督敎의 土着化過程에서 드러나는 특수한 한국적 여건에 덧붙여 이 새로운 西歐的 가치관념을 어떠한 자세로서 受容하여 왔는가를 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 舊韓末 유입된 基督敎는 그 自體 순수복음주의적 신앙 유형으로 들어온 것이었으나 개화기라는 시대배경 아래에 참여적 측면으로서도 작용하지 않을 수 없게 되었다. 이러한 基督敎의 傾向이 문학면으로 미친 영향을 主題意識에 미친 精神的인 측면과 語文生活에 미친 外形的 측면으로 크게 區分해 볼 수 있다. 本 稿에서의 考察視角은 作品內的인 배경으로서 따라서 前者의 경우에 맞추어진 것이다. 여기에서 특히 과도기 시대의 아미노적 정황에서 接脈된 新小說과 基督敎의 이러한 관련성을 그 宗敎의 윤리적 기능면에 초점을 두어 살펴보았다. 그런 결과로 基督敎的인 삶 자체를 倫理化한 新小說은 그 倫理意識의 경향이 앞서의 기독교 수용 방향에 따라 순수신앙의 개인적인 윤리 구현과 아울러 현실참여적인 사회윤리가 병행되어 나타났었음을 볼 수 있었다. 이와 같은 의식은 당신의 작가정신에 시대적 좌표로 부각되어 '기독교와의 접촉을 통하여 구관념을 비약한 새로운 질서 창조'로서의 문학적 의미를 지닌 것이었다. 그러나 이러한 기독교 이념의 文學的 形象化는 基督敎 정착시기의 短命性과 新小說의 文學技術的 미숙성으로 한계된 모습을 벗어날 수 없었다. 이러한 우리 文學의 基督敎的인 形成과 痕跡을 더듬어봄으로써 초기 한국기독교문학의 모습을 찾을 수 있다는 의미를 갖는다고 본다.;In the aspect of birth of the literature in the period of civilization, in general, the literature of this period is characterized as a kind of peculiar literature produced against civilization thought. Thus, the ultimate value of this lies in its artistical characters and accomplishment of its period mission. It is, therefore, very important that in researching the literature of this period, we should consider its historical and socio-ethic aspect corresponding to the peculiar situation of this period, prior to discussing its literary fruit. From this viewpoint, this study tries to research how the New Novel of this period accepted the new Occidental view of value in the special situation of Korea, which showed itself in the process of Christianity settling. At the end of the Empire of Korea, Christianity was introduced as a pure evangelism, but it couldn't help showing its aspect of participation against the period of civilization. The influences of this trend of Christianity on literature can be classified as the mental aspect on subject and the external one on literary life The viewpoint of this study focuses on the interior background of works, which is the former case. This study, in particular, consider this relation between the New Novel and Christianity - it occured in the situation peculiar to the transitional period - concentrating on the ethic aspect of that religion. As a result, both personal ethics as pure religion and social one related to the participation in reality contributed to the birth of the New Novel. This ethical consciousness emerged as a guide of the period to writers' spirit and had literary meaning as the creation of new order beyond traditional conception. Literary expression of Christianity like this revealed its limits due to the historical situation of that period and unskillfulness of literary technique. Nevertheless, it seems that we can see the feature of the early Christian literature in Korea by keeping track of Christian expression and traces through this study.
