George Gershwin의 <Rhapsody in Blue> 연구

Abstract

20세기에 들어와 전통적 양식과 음악관이 급격한 변화를 겪게 되면서, 전통에서 벗어난 새로운 것에 대한 추구는 많은 창조적인 음악가들에 의해 개성 있게 시도되고, 그 결과 20세기 음악은 "다양성"이라는 하나의 특징을 갖게 된다. 그러나 이 시대의 음악은 전통과의 급격한 단절로 청중과의 거리감을 생성시켰다. 이로써 대중음악의 수용이 가속화되고, 특히 1920년대에 재즈(Jazz)가 예술음악에 수용되는 결과를 가져왔다. 이 시기에 라벨(Ravel), 미요(Milhaud), 스트라빈스키(Stravinsky), 크셰넥(Krenek), 힌데미트(Hindemith), 코플랜드(Copland) 등의 작곡가들이 모두 전통적인 예술음악에서 재즈가 가질 수 있는 가능성들을 추구하였다. 그리고 조지 거슈윈(Ceorgo Gershwin)은 재즈 그 자체를 예술적으로 끌어 올려 20세기 초, 미국 음악의 흐름에 커다란 영향을 주었다. 이 논문은 20세기 음악에 대한 이해를 도모하는데 있어, 보다 쉽게 접근해 볼 수 있는 감상 작품을 제시해 보고자 하는 의도에서 1920년대에 재즈와 예술음악의 접목의 시도로 나타난 거슈윈의 성공작 <랩소디 인 블루(Rhapsody in Blue)>를 연구하였다. 특히 1920년대에 재즈가 예술음악에 수용되었다는 점에 초점을 두고, 작품의 구조적인 측면과 선율, 리듬, 화성에 전개되는 재즈 기법적인 특성을 중심으로 분석하였다. 초연 무대의 실황과 그 당시의 음악계의 반응과 여론 등 <랩소디 인 블루>를 바라보는 다양한 시각과 관점들이 소개되는데, 이러한 시대 상황과 비평을 바탕으로 하여 이제 탄생 1백주년을 넘어 선 오늘에 평가되는 <랩소디 인 블루>의 음악사적인 위치와 예술적 가치의 측면도 함께 다루고자 하였다. 이 작품은 구조적인 측면에서 그 이전 시대에서 볼 수 있는 정형화된 형식에서 탈피하여 각 부분들이 자유롭게 변형되고 또 이 주제들이 유기적으로 결합하는 다양성을 보여주고 있다. 재즈 기법적인 측면에서는 블루 음계(Blue Scale)의 사용으로 화성에 색채감을 더해 주고, 블루 노트가 선율에 중요한 역할을 하면서 조성의 모호함을 느끼게 해 준다. 또한 당김음으로 인한 오프 비트(Off Beat)의 리듬과 폴리리듬(Polyrhythm)이 곡 전체에 두드러지며, 주제가 반복되어 나타날 때에는 고전 음악에서의 전개의 차원이 아닌 동일한 주제를 변형시킴으로 재즈에서 나타나는 즉흥적 연주형태를 강하게 보여 준다. 거슈윈은 이 작품에서 재즈의 독특한 리듬과 블루스적 화성에 다양한 피아노 기법과 대형 연주 매체들을 융합하여 대중 음악으로 인식되어 왔던 재즈를 예술적인 음악 형태로 승화하고 재즈의 예술화를 이루었다. <랩소디 인 블루>를 비롯한 20세기 음악의 많은 부분이 재즈에서 유래된 여러 요소들로 채워져 있다. 다시 말해서 재즈의 기법들은 곧 20세기 음악적 특징의 한 부분이 될 수 있는 것이다. <랩소디 인 블루>는 재즈의 특성 즉 블루스(Blues)와 래그타임(Ragtime), 폴리 리듬과 즉흥성, 독특한 악기 편성으로 인한 미묘한 음색 등 20세기의 음악적 특징을 예술적으로 잘 드러내었다. 이러한 이유에서 이 곡이 20세기 음악의 이해를 도모하는데 좋은 작품으로 판단되며, 많은 20세기 작품 가운데서 보다 쉽게 접근해 볼 수 있는 감상 자료라 할 수 있다. 거슈윈 탄생 1백주년을 맞이한 1998년 지난 해, 그를 기념하기 위한 콘서트가 시카고, 필라델피아, 뉴욕을 비롯한 미국 12개 도시와 캐나다, 영국, 프랑스, 이스라엘, 포르투갈 등 세계 곳곳에서 성대하게 거행되었다. 이제 20세기 최고의 "팝 클래식(Pop Classic)" 으로 역사에 자리 잡은 거슈윈의 <랩소디 인 블루>의 연구는 20세기를 마감하는 이 시점에서 그를 재조명해 보는 더욱 의미 있는 일이 될 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다.;In the 20th century, traditional styles and music underwent dramatic change, and a pursuit for the new was attempted by many creative musicians. In result, the 20th century's music has "diversity" as a characteristic. However, music in this age created separation from the audience because of abrupt discontinuation from tradition. Therefore, the acceptance of popular music was accelerated, and Jazz became a part of art music in the 1920s. In this period, composers such as Ravel, Milhaud, Stravinsky, Krenek, Hindemith, and Copland pursued the possibility of Jazz in traditional music, and George Gershwin elevated Jazz to art level, and it greatly affected the flow of American music. This paper studies Gershwin's <Rhapsody in Blue> appearing as an attempt of applying Jazz to art music in the 1920s for the purpose of suggesting music to make an easy approach to the 20th century's music. Especially, focusing on the fact that Jazz was accepted to art music in the 1920s, the structure of the piece and jazzy characteristics developed in its melody, rhythm and harmony. Also, the real condition of the first performance and various views of <Rhapsody in Blue> in the music field of that time are introduced, and the musical status in music history and art value of <Rhapsody in Blue>, reappreciated in its 100th anniversary, are also examined based on the condition and criticism of that time. This piece presents diversity with each part freely transformed, and this theme organically combined, escaping standard forms found in the former age in the aspect of structure. In terms of jazz technique, the use of blue notes adds color and affluence to harmony, and it gives ambiguity to tone, playing an important role in melody. Also, off-beat rhythm and polyrhythm by syncopation stand out in the whole piece, and the repetition of the theme shows improvisation in jazz by transforming the same subject unlike the development of classical music. In this work, Gershwin turns jazz into artistic music form which had been recognized as popular music by using unique rhythm and blues harmony of jazz, various piano techniques and large performance media. Many parts of the 20th century's music are filled with elements originated from jazz. In other words, jazz technique can be part of the 20th century's music characteristics. <Rhapsody in blue> reveals well the characteristics of jazz; blues and Ragtime, polyrhythm and improvisation, and delicate tone made by unique instrument arrangement. For this reason, this piece will help understand the 20th century's music, and it is a good material for appreciation we can easily approach among many of the 20th century's pieces. Last year, in 1998, there were a lot of concerts for celebrating 100th anniversary of Gershwin's birth, in the world including Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and other American cities, Canada, England, France, Israel, and Portugal. I think this study on <Rhapsody in blue>, the best "Pop Classic" in the 20th century, can be meaningful in reexamining Gershwin's music in the threshold of the 21st century.
