Abstract
This thesis is a research about various methods of expression and contents in Jim Dine's art which is focused on six characteristic subjects. He was interested in the form of Pop Arts in his earlier works, however, shows his interests in its personal and individual images rather than its public ones. only became a part of his work for him. Pop Unlikely to the typical artists who use themes such as a symbol of American society and culture, Jim Dine introduces the objects of personal relation and presents the way to reconcile them with paintings. But in terms of the techniques in his works, he has created pictorial scenes applying improvised, energetic, and free brush strokes and seemed to assimilate Abstract Expressionism in order to express his inner being positively. He has taken Neo-Dada which applies an expressive technique from the esthetics of Abstract Expressionism as well as the materials of Pop Arts. Jim Dine's art is produced by many methods-drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, objects, happening-his production in each method can be isolated and analyzed separately to great benefit. His happening which has been influenced by Allan Kaprow who emphasizes a "creation of newness" inclines to pursue implicit catharsis and is characterized to express individual contents. A happening developed from assemblage method is spontaneously connected to another expressive one. His sculpture and objects and produced to reinforce a value of image he has created in his drawings, printmakings, and paintings. He was especially interested in individual images. So that he has worked with certain subjects-tools, hearts, robe, trees, figures, animals, and Venus-which can be seen in everyday life. These subjects have been recurred as creation, disappearance, and recreation for a long time. Sometimes they are presented as compound images or as a single one. They have been very basic and important images in his works and played crucial roles that define their characters. Jim dine's art is characterized by the investment of multiple He projects part of layers of meaning in the objects he depicts. hie psyche, his emotional inner being, onto these objects, so that each one becomes a container that he fills and then uses as an instrument of communication with the viewer. He takes a paintbrush-whether it is a depiction of a paintbrush or the real tool itself-and isolates it from its functional context, letting it hang in midair. Or he empties a man's robe, so that it floats bodiless in atmospheric color. He turns these images into repositories of his Own emotional state, but at the same time viewers are seduced into projecting their own feeling onto the subject. And these works connote foreshadows based on simplicity and emotion of deep thought behind the lightness. The subjects in Jim Dine's works are the motive that has been found in the search for himself and they-tool, robe, heart, tree, figure, Venus-have occupied great part as interests of individual area and as images in his art and symbolized the original, direct, and autobiographical art of Jim Dine. The purposes of this thesis are to examine Jim Dine's experimental creativity and to find the characteristics of his art that not only accept the rapidly changing stream of Modern Art but also exhibit his own identity based on these six subjects which has been ap peared through his art.
