In piano playing technique, the emphasis was placed on finger movements with the development of modern pianos in the late 18th century. In the nineteenth century, however, "The Anatomic - Physiological Technique" emerged as the mainstream instead of "The Finger School" which advocated mechanical finger movements in piano performance. Going through developments in musical and psychological aspect, "The Anatomic-Physiological" technique put piano playing into perspective. "The Anatomic-Physiological" technique is consistent with the trend of modern music education as well as the idea of comprehensive piano playing. Modern music education stresses a comprehensive approach in developing students' musical capabilities. But the Korean piano education is not yet familiar with the concept of the 'Physiological' approach. Thus, systematic research on physiological technique is needed to attain better performance techniques, acquire more logical ways of playing, and better express one's musicality. The objective of this study is offer insight for the development of desirable piano techniques. To that end, this study mainly deals with the relationship between piano techniques and human anatomy rather than the physical training for a mastery of mechanical techniques. This study also tries to add the anatomic and physiological approach to the element of piano education along with intellectual and musical ones, eventually contributing to the development of musical capabilities and musicality of students. With reference to related books and documents, this study conducts in-depth research on the development of piano techniques during the period from the eighteenth century to the present. Based on the anatomy-physiology framework, thorough examination is carried out on tension and relaxation; functions and characteristics of muscles and joints closely related to piano playing. This study also takes an organized approach to the interrelationship between human anatomy and modern piano techniques such as Free Fall, Thrust, Rotation, Scale & Arpeggio, Legato and Staccato. To help the explanation of these techniques, examples are chosen from the Etudes of F. Chopin and F. Liszt, as they are commonly selected for piano practice. The present study finds that better understanding and use of tension and relaxation could lead to the reduction of unnecessary musclar tension and thereby achieve efficient playing and fine expression. The relationship between anatomy and piano performance proves that not just a particular body part but the arms as a whole cooperate to generate all the functions needed to play the piano more naturally and smoothly. To play the piano without putting strains on the body, one should understand each technique pattern and master basic skills for performance. If one has correct knowledge of each muscular function in piano playing and is aware of how to actually put this knowledge into practice, he or she will reach better musical expression, the outcome of the integration of musical and intellectual sense. This study intends to help students go beyond imitating their teachers' styles and concentrate on their own musical experience; the anatomic physiological approach lets students take a comprehensive approach instead of a narrow-minded approach in their learning. Furthermore, this study could provide an insightful contribution to the improvement of students' piano playing techniques.;피아노 연주법은 18세기 말엽 근대 피아노의 발달과 함께 손가락 중심의 연주법이 주를 이루었고 19세기에 이르러 이러한 기계적인 주법 중심의 손가락학파(The Finger School)에 반대하는 입장의 '생리신체학적(The Anatomic - Physiological)' 연주법이 중요한 위치를 차지하여 왔다.
