소춘(小春) 김기전(金起田)의 소년해방사상과 실천 연구

Abstract

This study is on Sochun, Kim Gi-jeon(1894-?) to whom people have paid a little attention until now in spite of his great effect on the Modern Korean Juvenile Movement. He was a superior thinker who raised serious juvenile problems in Korea and suggested a theoretical base of the juvenile movement at that time. For that reason, the purpose of this study is to review his juvenile liberal thought and practices based on the thought, focused on his studies concerning juvenile problems published in the 『Gaebyeok(The Creation)』, in which he had served as the chief editor. The formation of a juvenile view of Sochun, who was a devout believer of the Cheondogyo as a leader in develping the Cheondogyo Cultural Movement, was affected greatly by the Cheondogyo thought, 'all people are God'. Recognizing the juvenile problems of those days in the liberal aspect, he suggested that unless the juvenile liberal problems are solved, it is impossible to solve other juvenile problems as well as to achieve the true human liberation and emphasized the importance of juvenile liberation. As a part of such suggestion, Sochun criticized the then adult-oriented social system and stressed that all social benefits should be provided preferentially for juvenile, in order to embody the thought of juvenile liberation. Based on this thought, he helped the juvenile, who had been regarded as insignificant existence at that time, to free from the shackles of 'The senior prior to the juvenile(The younger should give precedence to the elder)'. And, he established the first systematic juvenile movement association, ‘Cheondogyo Boy Scouts’ and embodied the his own juvenile liberal thought. He suggested that the juvenile movement should be expanded to a national independence movement and proposed a direction into which the juvenile movement should advance ultimately, pressing that our last hope to revitalize the people who faced a crisis relied on the juvenile movement. In conclusion, his thought as described above has a more significant meaning in the aspect that it has been formed spontaneously in the climate of Korea, separately from the foreign trend.;본 논문은 근대한국소년운동에 큰 영향을 미쳤지만 지금까지 소홀하게 다뤄진 소춘 김기전에 관한 연구이다. 그는 우리나라 소년문제의 심각성을 제기하고 당시 소년운동의 이론적 틀을 제시한 뛰어난 사상가였다. 이에 그가 주간으로 있었던 『개벽』지에 발표된 그의 소년문제에 관련된 논문들을 중심으로 그의 소년해방의 사상과 이를 바탕으로 한 실천을 조명해 보는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 그가 소년해방사상을 형성하는 데 있어 식민지 치하라는 시대적 배경과 인본주의에 기초한 천도교 사상은 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 독실한 천도교 신자였으며 천도교 문화운동을 전개함에 있어 주도적 역할을 했던 소춘의 소년관 형성에는 '모든 사람이 하느님이다'라는 천도교 사상의 영향은 지대했다. 동학의 2대 교주인 해월의 사인여천(事人如天)사상을 중심으로 한 동학의 인간존중사상은 소년애호사상을 내재하고 있었고 이를 기반으로 소춘의 소년해방사상이 형성되었기 때문이다. 그는 이러한 천도교 사상을 바탕으로 전통사회의 소년관의 기본이념으로 작용했던 '장유유서'의 모순을 지적했다. 본래 어른과 아이의 인간적인 도리였던 장유유서의 가치관은 점차 변질되어 '아이는 어른의 마음대로 해도 되는 소유물'이라고 인식되기에 이르렀다는 것이다. 그러므로 소춘은 당시에 소년의 인격이 말살된 원인이 '장유유서'의 모순에 있다고 확신하며 이를 시급히 고칠 것을 촉구하였다. 그는 우리의 희망은 오직 소년에 있다며 소년에 대한 인격존중의 방법으로 소년들에게 쓰던 말버릇을 고쳐 경어를 쓰자고 주장하였다. 또한 그는 소년을 양육하고 장례를 치름에 있어서도 소년을 온전한 사람으로 인정하지 않는 어른의 의식이 그대로 드러난다고 비판하며 의복, 음식, 거처, 기타 일상생활에서 어린이를 어른과 동격으로 대하여야 한다고 주장하였다. 그는 소년의 문제를 해방의 차원에서 인식하고 소년해방의 문제를 해결하지 않고서는 인간해방도 불가능할 뿐만 아니라 다른 소년문제도 해결할 수 없음을 주장하며 소년해방의 중요성을 역설하였다. 이에 소춘은 소년해방의 사상을 실현하기 위해 당시의 어른 중심의 사회제도를 비판하며 모든 사회적 혜택이 소년에게 우선적으로 주어져야 함을 주장하였다. 이로써 그는 당시 보잘것 없었던 존재로 여겨졌던 소년들을 '장유유서'의 족쇄에서 해방시키고 사인여천의 시각에서 본 새로운 소년관을 제시하였던 것이다. 이에 그는 최초의 본격적인 소년운동 단체인 '천도교 소년회'를 조직하고 자신이 천명한 소년해방사상을 구체적으로 실현시켰다. 1923년 5월 1일 열린 전국적인 규모의 어린이날에 '소년운동의 선언'이 발표되었는데 이의 기초자(起草者)는 소춘이라고 생각된다. 또한 소춘은 '어린이날 노래'를 직접 작사하였다. 당시 소년운동의 가장 대표적인 행사인 어린이날 운동이 그 이념에 있어 소춘의 것을 그대로 반영하고 있다. 이것으로 보아 당시 소년운동을 전개함에 있어서 소춘의 영향이 지대했음을 알 수 있다. 또한 그는 위기에 처한 민족을 회생시킬 수 있는 유일한 희망이 소년운동에 있음을 강조하며 소년운동이 민족독립운동으로 거듭나야한다며 소년운동이 궁극적으로 나아가야할 방향을 제시하였다. 이와 같은 그의 사상이 외국의 사조와는 별도로 우리나라의 풍토에서 자생적으로 발생하였다는 데 더 큰 의의가 있다고 하겠다.
