Culture in modern society is changing faster, and huge amounts of knowledge and information are being produced. Since a country can determine its external competitiveness in this era by the amount of information and knowledge it can utilize, it attaches importance to education capable of fostering related human resources. Thus, many countries around the world continue to invest in education and to research into education to innovate it effectively innovate education, above all things, it is important to enhance the professionalism of teachers who are directly involved in education. fine arts and its curriculum are amended by the inherent needs of the subject of fine arts itself, as well as by changes in national and social needs, knowledge, and needs of users. The fine arts curriculum in middle schools seeks to help enhance the understanding of world cultures in this internalization era, and to strengthen the education on appreciation in its seventh curriculum amendment, thereby pursuing a change to fine arts and education. However, the fine arts education in middle schools seems to distance itself from this purpose of the curriculum, and to be complacent with the past expression-centered fine arts education, thereby failing to respond to social needs and changes, and to properly function. This weakening of fine arts education is attributable to teachers' lack of professionalism, which is caused by problematic reeducation programs of fostering teachers. Thus, this paper aims to regard the education of teachers as the basis for promoting the professionalism of teachers of fine arts in middle schools, and to look into how graduate schools of education (where professional personnel are fostered and educated) conduct education for teachers of the middle school subject of fine arts, and into what should be improved. To this end, first, the research analyzed the operation of curricula and classes of six graduate schools of fine arts education located in Seoul, as well as three graduate schools of fine arts education in the United States. Second, 200 students in the said graduate schools in Seoul (including current teachers, experts in fine arts education and preliminary teachers) were sampled and surveyed. 170 effective collected responses were analyzed statistically. A unique survey tool was developed by this researcher, and the data were made to undergo frequency, percentage and Χ²(Chi-square) tests, using the SPSS 12.0 program. The survey aimed to determine whether the teacher education curricula of graduate schools is suitable for promoting the professionalism of the subject of fine arts, to find problems, and to come up with improvement measures. The following results were inferred. First, as for their motivation to study at graduate schools of education, current teachers cited reeducation, and preliminary teachers cited the acquisition of a teacher's license. As such, motivations differed markedly between current teachers, preliminary teachers and experts in fine arts education. Second, current teachers, preliminary teachers and experts in fine arts education regarded the professionalism of teachers of fine arts that should be fostered at graduate schools of education, as fine arts learning, and the theory of teaching. Also, as for the area of professionalism that these three groups thought they were lacking in, current teachers cited the practical ability of fine arts, and preliminary teachers and experts cited fine arts learning, and theory of teaching. Third, as to their satisfaction with the subjects and curricula of graduate schools of education, most of students offered a positive response, and notably they said that they learned the education field (theories on fine arts education, educational theories on aesthetics, research into and teaching methods of fine arts, etc.) of the subject of fine arts among various subjects, thereby promoting their professionalism. Fourth, as to requirements for the curricula for teacher education aimed at promoting the professionalism of graduate schools of education, respondents were satisfied with the curricula of graduate schools of education, but hoped that diverse subjects would be offered, and that smaller classes should be arranged. They also wanted the type of instructors who are active in diverse fields. With these purposes, the following proposals are presented for a study on teacher education at graduate schools of education aimed at promoting the professionalism of the middle school subject of fine arts. First, currently, graduate schools of education offer the two teacher education courses - a course aimed at fostering preliminary teachers and a course for reeducating current teachers. This means that the curricula for students at graduate schools of education should be different. However, graduate schools of education currently do not offer consistently different courses. They offer an ambiguous course, which does not necessarily serve both purposes for current teachers and preliminary teachers. Thus, diverse, differentiated curricula need to be developed to be suitable to current teachers and preliminary teachers. Notably, in case of classes for current teachers, graduate schools of education should develop and offer models of classes that are suitable to reality, enabling teachers to conduct quality classes in schools. Second, graduate schools of education should play a distinctive role of specializing in educating and fostering teachers. To this end, the curricula of graduate schools of education should offer not only a study on theories, but also more field-oriented diverse courses. Third, graduate schools of education should improve the quality of subjects, explore diverse major subjects, and provide superior instructors in order to cultivate the teaching ability and other necessary qualities of students. Fourth, in an effort to ensure a long-term development of graduate schools of fine are education, and to respond to the ever-changing social and educational needs, the opening of a doctoral course in education should be considered in connection with the current master's course in graduate schools of education. Education of fine arts in middle school does not function properly due to a lack of teacher education. Graduate schools of education, which are responsible for the education of fine arts in middle schools, are expected to promote the professionalism of middle school teachers of fine arts and the quality of middle school fine arts to allow them to adjust to the ever-changing educational field. To this end, graduate schools of education should further strengthen support for teacher education and research efforts to respond to user needs.-
