Abstract
The purpose of this study is to review the role of the church for adults' life long music education and determine church music leaders' attributes for their adequate choir leadership. In order to help church music leaders develop their leadership, church music leadership programs are operated by various universities in their "Pyongsaeng Kyoyuk kigwan"(i.e. Informal schools) their conditions compared to determine whether they are providing adequate programs conducive to the development of church music leaders' attributes, and thereby suggesting some changes for the programs operated by the University It was found that nine colleges in Seoul were operating their informal education programs for church music leaders: Korean Bible University, Holy Music Academy under Catholic Church Music Graduate School, Methodist Theological Seminry, International Theological Seminary, Christian Music College, Dankook University, Myongji University, Seoul Theological Seminary and Soongsil University. As a result of reviewing their programs, it was found that the programs were very diversified. In view of academic periods, they could be divided into credit accreditation and single-semester programs. For example, Church Music Leaders' Program under Catholic University did not adopt an accreditation system, but they have been providing some similar courses. Since a single semester program cannot suffice to meet church music leaders' needs for professional knowledge and attributes, most of the current Life long Educational department under the Universities programs seem to be limited to choral conducting skills and anthems. In other words, the current informal programs for church chorus leaders seem to play only a partial role in educating church chorus leaders, scarecely providing for more diversified and in-depth accreditation courses. Since it may well be desirable to provide for diversified courses reflecting students' various needs, it may be useful to operate a single-semester program for church choir leaders, but a progressive course for each semester, as in Seoul Theological Seminary, seems to be a desirable model alternative for the Life long Educational department of church chorus leaders. Finally, the church education leaders' programs operated by various informal education institutes at universities should be reformed to make use of the professional in-house faculty and thereby, allow the students to attend the undergraduate or graduate classrooms. Only the church education leaders' program operated by International Theological Seminary allows its students to attend their graduate course classrooms after completion of the program. In order to achieve the goal of training for professional church musicicians set by 'church music leaders programs' operated by the informal education institutes attachd to Universities, it is essential for them to design and operate more diverse and in-depth courses. It is hoped that this study will provide some basic data to help the achieve such a goal.
