신문자료를 이용한 지리수업 효과에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 신문을 이용한 수업을 실시하여 그 효과를 검증해 봄으로써 신문의 지리 교육에서의 효과를 밝히고 신문 자료에 대한 관심을 높이며, 신문을 학습자료로 이용한 수업에 대한 시사점을 제시하고자 하는데 있다. 이와 같은 목적에 따라 다음과 같은 가설을 설정하였다. [가설 1] 신문을 이용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 전통적인 수업보다 학생들의 학습 동기 유발에 효율적일 것이다. [가설 2] 신문을 이용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 전통적인 수업보다 학생들의 수업에 대한 선호도가 높을 것이다. [가설 3] 신문을 이용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 전통적인 수업보다 학업성취도에 있어서 높은 효과가 있을 것이다. 위의 가설을 검증하기 위해 본 연구는 부천시에 소재한 인문계 고등학교 2학년 6개 학급을 대상으로 이루어졌으며 세 개 학급은 실험집단으로 하고 나머지 세 개 학급은 비교집단으로 설정하였다. 실험 단원은 한국지리 교과서의 '환경과 보전' 단원으로 하였고, 2차시에 걸쳐 신문을 이용한 수업을 실험집단에 실시하고, 비교 집단에서는 교과서 위주의 전통적 수업을 실시하였다. 그 결과를 분석하기 위해서 마지막 3차시에서는 수업에 대한 설문과 총괄 평가를 실시함으로써 수업에 대한 학생들의 의견을 수렴하고, 학업 성취도를 측정하여 위 가설을 입증해 보았다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신문을 이용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 수업에 비해 학생들의 호기심을 고취시키고, 학습에 대한 지속적인 욕구를 갖게 하는 등 학습 동기 유발에 효과적이라는 결과를 얻었다. 둘째, 신문을 활용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 전통적 수업보다 학생들로부터 수업에 대한 선호도가 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 신문을 활용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 전통적 수업보다 수업에 대한 지루함을 덜 느끼게 하며, 수업에의 집중이 잘 되고, 수업 내용의 이해에도 도움을 준다는 결과를 얻었다. 넷째, 신문을 이용한 수업은 교과서 위주의 수업에 비해 학생들의 학업 성취도 측면에 있어서 높은 효과적이었다. 이상의 결과에 따른 본 연구에서의 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지리 교사들이 신문의 교육적 효과에 동감하고 신문의 수집과 수업에의 이용에 노력을 기울여야 하겠다. 둘째, 신문을 이용한 수업의 활성화를 위해서는 신문사의 보조(신문의 무료배급이나 학습 자료로 유용한 기사 모음집을 정기적으로 책으로 발간 등)나 교육부의 정책적인 뒷받침(internet을 이용한 신문 기사의 검색을 위해 컴퓨터실 확충과 internet 망 연결)이 요구된다. 셋째, 신문을 이용한 수업의 효과가 타당성을 얻기 위해서는 장기간에 걸쳐 다양한 단원에 적용된 수업에서의 학습 효과를 밝혀 보는 후속 연구가 필요하다. 넷째, 강의식 수업 방법 외에 다양한 수업 방법(탐구식, 토의식, 문제 해결식 수업)에서 신문을 이용하는 학습프로그램을 개발하여 그 효과를 살펴보는 후속 연구가 계속되어야 하겠다. 다섯째, 학생들이 신문기사 선정과 수집에 직접 참여하는 지리 수업 효과에 대한 후속 연구가 이루어져야 하겠다.;The purpose of this study is to inquire the effect of newspapers in geography classes, to increase the interests in the newspapers as a teaching material, and to suggest some ideas of using newspapers in class. For that purpose, I set up three hypotheses as follows. Hypothesis 1. The class using newspapers would be effective in attracting students' attention compared with the traditional approach. Hypothesis 2. The students in the class using newspapers would prefer the new class than the traditional one. Hypothesis 3. The class using newspapers would be more effective in accomplishment than traditional class centering on the textbook. To testify above hypotheses, I made an experiment on the students of high school in Puchon, and set three class as experimental groups, and other three classes as control groups. The title of the chapter on examination is "Environment & Preservation". I gave lessons using the newspapers to the experimental groups and traditional lessons to the compared group. To analyse the results, I made up a questions and inquired the improvements in accomplishments. The result runs as follows. First, a class with newspapers attracts more attention from the students and stimulated them to study. Second, a class with newspapers was considered as interesting and as a result, helpful in understanding of contents. Third, a class with newspapers made meaningful advancement in accomplish its goals compared with traditional textbook centered classes. The followings are the suggestions based on this study. First, the teachers of geography should try to use the newspapers during their class. Second, to activate the class with newspapers, it is required to get assistance from the newspaper companies -free delivery to the schoools or periodic publication of news useful to the students-, supports from the ministry of education (extension of computer rooms to look for the material by the internet). Third, to get conformation in using newspapers during the class, continuous study is necessary. Fourth, we, geography teachers, should develop the various programs to use the newspapers with various teaching methods. Fifth, it is necessary to study the effects of the classes in which the students are encouraged to take part in collecting and choosing the news.
