Abstract
In order to enhance piano education, which is considered as a basic for the music education, it is an essential task to analyze the college music curriculum for a piano major : starting point for advanced music education, assess problems and find solutions to correct them. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current college music curriculum for a piano major in order to provide data to be used for improving educational system in music and establishing direction of music education. The curriculum samples used for the analysis were centered around those for a piano major in school of music of eight universities located in Seoul, Korea. Prior to the analysis, inquiries into the current situation of the nationwide departments related to music and music departments in Seoul, and studies on related literature about worldwide histories of changes and progresses of the piano education were performed. And also, the related research papers were referenced to examine the status of occupations of graduates from the school of music. Based on the base studies described above, the objectives of the school of music and for a piano major were examined closely by comparing and adjusting those from the eight universities, and required credits completed for graduation in Korea and in the advanced music institutions in the U.S.A were compared and adjusted. In the analysis of curriculum, current major subjects offered by each eight universities were investigated and the following items for each university are analyzed in detail: (a) Number of major courses (b) Total credits of common courses (c) Required subjects among common courses (d) Elective courses for major (e) Ratio of theory and performance (f) Sorting assigned music for performance by grade The problems discovered from this study and solutions for correcting these problems are discussed below. (1) It is required to establish a supervising institution to monitor curriculum and their implementations, because they lack in overall uniformity between universities due to its' own self-regulated curriculum and practice by each university. (2) Number of major courses offered and credits required for graduation are not adequate to provide efficient education in quality. Major courses and number of credits required for graduation should be gradually increased. (3) There should be agreements between universities about number of credits of common courses and semester year to take these courses, because they varies depending on universities and they can create gaps in depth of major courses. (4) Agreements should be made between universities about standard for designating required and electives from common courses. (5) Number of required major courses for performance should be increased to improve the techniques. (6) Universities should provide students more variety of music for selecting assigned music for performance. (7) Universities should provide curriculum in keeping up with rapidly changing modem society and provide graduates opportunities to pursue variety of occupations. (8) Each university should create unique curriculum and manage to promote its' specialty. This study has made an invaluable contribution in improving curriculums and their managements for advancing national level of the music education.
