Abstract
The informations of the monthly mean vertical p-velocity(o) and hydrometeor(i,e., clouds and rain) activity over the tropical oceans (30˚ N- 30˚ S ) are derived from the correlation coefficients, computed from the brightness temperatures of the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) flown on NOAA satellites. The empirical formula which estimates the vertical velocity has been constrnxcted by compaxing outputs from the general circulation model (GCM) of either Goddard Laboratory for Atmosphere (GLA) or European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts {ECMWF) with 6 years oE microwave observations. In order to relate the correlation coefficients with the o of the GCMs, a radiative transfer model is utilized to simulate the observations of the MSU Channel 1 (Chl) at 50.3 GHz and Channel 2 (Ch2) at 53.74 GHz. From theoretical simulations. we infer that the extinction due to hydrometeors in Chl causes an increase in brightness temperature, while that in Ch2 causes a decrease, leading to the negative correlation between Chl temperatures over the tropical oceans. This negative correlation due scattering by the hydrometeors on the top of convective clouds is assumed to be associated with rising motions in the tropics. Based on the assumption, the o-formula has been derived by using the γ outputs of GCMs as an initial data which determine the constants in the regression equation. The correlation coefficients generally agree with γ of the GCMs in the distribution and magnitude of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the South Pacific Convergence Zone showing the correlation of 0.72∼0.85. However, the discrepancy between two results is large in the tropical Atlantic ocean. The study of atmospheric motion with satellite data can be useful for the improvement of the GCM and for the climate study over the regions in lack of synoptic observations.
